NYT PUBLIC EDITOR CHIDES FAILURE TO IDENTIFY AUTHOR AS MURDERER by JTA The Public Editor of the New York Times took the newspaper to task for failing to identify Palestinian Authority leader Marwan Barghouti as a convicted murderer of Israeli Jews. Public Editor Liz Spayd was responding to criticism of the newspaper for publishing on Sunday an Op-Ed by Barghouti titled "Why We Are on Hunger Strike in Israel’s Prisons" and identifying him only as "a Palestinian leader and parliamentarian." Nearly a day later, an editor’s note appended to the end of the opinion piece clarified that Barghouti is serving a lengthy prison term after being convicted in an Israeli court of five counts of murder and membership in a terrorist organization. The publication of the article marked the beginning of a hunger strike by hundreds of security prisoners jailed in Israel. Failure to "more fully identify the biography and credentials of authors, especially details that help people make judgments about the opinions they’re reading," Spayd wrote, "risks the credibility of the author and the Op-Ed pages." "In this case, I’m pleased to see the editors responding to the complaints, and moving to correct the issue rather than resist it. Hopefully, it’s a sign that fuller disclosure will become regular practice," Spayd wrote. The newspaper was slammed by Israeli leaders and U.S. Jewish groups for its failure to mention Barghouti’s terrorist activities and conviction for murder. 2. MARWAN BARGHOUTI PUNISHED FOR NY TIMES ARTICLE by Orly Harari Terrorist Marwan Barghouti, who is leading the hunger strike, wrote an op-ed in The New York Times, explaining his reasons for launching the hunger strike. "After spending the past 15 years of my life in an Israeli jail, I am both witness to and victim of the illogical system of randomized arrests and terrible treatment of prisoners," Barghouti wrote in his article. "After I attempted every other option available, I decided I had no other choice but to protest the mistreatment by means of a hunger strike. "Hunger striking is a quiet way of protest. The only ones who suffer are the ones who strike, and their loved ones. The strikers hope their empty stomachs and their sacrifice will help their message force its way out of their dark prison cells. "Decades of experience have shown that the occupation's inhumane system of colonial and military occupation is intended to break the spirits of both the prisoners and their entire nation. The occupation hopes to accomplish this by abusing the prisoners' bodies, separating them from their families and communities, and forcing them to subjugate themselves. "Despite this treatment, we will not give in." The Israel Prison Service on Monday morning said, "The prisoners' hunger strike endangers their health and their lives, both of which are the responsibility of the Israeli government. Hunger strikes - especially organized hunger strikes - also disrupt the order and discipline in the jails. "The Israel Prison Service will take steps to punish the strikers, and has already transferred several of the striking prisoners to separate wings." COGAT Major-General Yoav Mordechai attacked The New York Times for omitting the fact that Barghouti is a terrorist and murderer, who led a terror organization responsible for the deaths of many Israelis. "According to this American newspaper, Barghouti is a leader and member of parliament," Mordechai said. "But somehow the paper's editors forgot to mention that he is directly responsible for the murders of many Israelis, and that he led the 'Al-Aqsa Brigade' during the Second Intifada. "It would have been better to write at the end of the article that Barghouti was convicted in 2004, after a fair trial influenced by no political agendas. "Barghouti was convicted of murder and terror activities, and was sentenced to five life sentences and forty years in prison. He is a terrorist and a murderer." Barghouti initiated the current hunger strike, which includes 1,187 terrorist prisoners. He was transferred from the Hadarim Prison to the Kishon Prison as punishment. 3. 'FACEBOOK KILLER' KILLS HIMSELF by Gary Willig Steve Stephens, the so-called "Facebook killer" who murdered an elderly man in Cleveland and posted a video of the killing on Facebook, killed himself as cops moved in to arrest him Tuesday. Stevens was spotted by state police while driving in Erie County, Pennsylvania. When the the police attempted to pull him over he fled, leading to a brief chase. "After a brief pursuit, Stephens shot and killed himself," Pennsylvania State Police said on Facebook. Stephans had shot and killed Robert Godwin in a random and senseless act of violence Sunday. He recorded the gruesome killing on his phone and posted the video to social media. Pennsylvania State Police plan to hold a press briefing on the case Tuesday afternoon. [youtube:2026979] 4. WOMAN CONVICTED OF INCITING VIOLENCE ON SOCIAL MEDIA by Ido ben Porat The Petah Tikvah Magistrate’s Court has convicted Ms. Eliraz Fein of inciting to violence on social media, three years after she was arrested. In 2014, in the midst of a volatile atmosphere resulting from incidents including the destruction of structures in Yitzhar, the kidnapping and murder of three young men in Gush Etzion, and the Duma fire incident, Fein posted on her Facebook page and in the "Yitzharniks" Google group statements identifying with violent action against Arabs. Fein, who today lives in Otniel south of Hevron, previously lived in Yitzhar in Samaria, and had written on the "Yitzharniks" group on April 8, 2014: "..."I am in favor of throwing rocks (at Jews - as for Arabs, it goes without saying) in certain situations – even if the rock causes the death of a soldier!" After the Dawabshe family home in the Arab village of Duma was set on fire with a Molotov cocktail, Fein called on Facebook "to terrify them and cause them to understand that the blood of Jews is not worthless, for committing murder the enemy will bathe in his own blood!"; "I see it as a correct and worthy act"; "It is worthy and honorable in my eyes to damage Arab property." After the posting on the Yitzharniks forum , Yitzhar spokesman Ezri Tuvi had said that "we have denounced this kind of talk in the past, and will do so in the future. This involves a minor and a woman, whose emotions caused their tongues to slip and who have already taken back their words. On the other hand, we demand that the media also totally denounce all talk of violence, and incitement to hatred and physical harm against the 'settler' public." 5. COMING SOON: SOLDIERS TO BE REQUIRED TO CARRY PEPPER SPRAY In another month-and-a-half, on July 5, the IDF will begin to enforce a new order obligating soldiers not carrying a rifle on their person to carry pepper spray. Since January 2017, every soldier irrespective of gender receives pepper spray during enlistment. In addition, since March pepper spray has been distributed to soldiers already serving in the IDF. This distribution will finish on July 1. IDF official Meirav Hatan Goldshtein said of the developments, "our goal is to give soldiers - male and female - not carrying a weapon an additional possibility for defending themselves when needed." 6. WATCH: BILLY FINDS OUT FOR HIMSELF ABOUT ISRAEL by Arutz Sheva This video is one of the ten finalists in the Adam & Gila Milstein Family Foundation's "Inspired by Israel" video contest run by the Israel Video Network. NEW YORK TIMES 'CLARIFIES' GLORIFICATION OF TERRORIST MASTERMIND by David Rosenberg The New York Times offered a tepid response Monday evening to an uproar sparked by the publication of an opinion piece by an arch-terrorist responsible for multiple suicide bombings against Israelis, and the whitewashing of the terrorist’s criminal past. On Sunday, in the midst of the Passover festival, The New York Times published a propaganda piece by Fatah terrorist Marwan Barghouti justifying a hunger strike by jailed terrorists. In publishing the piece, the Times gave the convicted murderer Barghouti a free hand to spread canards against the Jewish state, justify terrorist activity targeting Israeli Jews, and delegitimize the very existence of Israel. Like many anti-Israel screeds, Barghouti’s NYT piece describes Israel as a "colonial" power, comparing the Jewish state to apartheid-ridden South Africa and accusing it of various human rights abuses. Amazingly, however, the Times initially published the piece with no reference to Barghouti’s crimes or his membership in a terrorist organization – a stunning omission given that the focus of the article is his imprisonment. Instead, the Times described Barghouti as "a Palestinian leader and parliamentarian". Nowhere did the Times acknowledge Barghouti’s role as a senior member of the Fatah Tanzim terror group, nor his involvement in multiple shooting and suicide bombing attacks which left 26 people dead during the Second Intifada. While Barghouti portrays his imprisonment as an "arbitrary arrest", calling himself a "victim of Israel’s illegal" justice system, he in fact is serving five life sentences following a 2004 conviction including five counts of murder for terror attacks he directed in 2001 and 2002. The decision to publish Barghouti’s piece and the failure to reference his crimes drew heavy criticism from Israeli officials. "This is not a matter of freedom of speech," said Deputy Foreign Minister Tzipi Hotovely. "It is anarchy. When a major newspaper with a reputation for responsible journalism becomes a platform for murderers, it provides legitimacy for terrorism. This is a very disappointing decision by the editors which seriously undermines the credibility of The New York Times." In response, the Times, rather than retract the piece, merely added an Editors’ Note on Monday, acknowledging that no mention had been made of Barghouti’s conviction. "This article explained the writer’s prison sentence but neglected to provide sufficient context by stating the offenses of which he was convicted. They were five counts of murder and membership in a terrorist organization. Mr. Barghouti declined to offer a defense at his trial and refused to recognize the Israeli court’s jurisdiction and legitimacy." 8. SEARCH WIDENS FOR SUSPECT WHO BROADCAST MURDER OF ELDERLY MAN by David Rosenberg [youtube:2026979] The manhunt for the suspected murderer of an elderly Ohio man expanded to five states on Monday, with authorities warning residents in Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Indiana, and Michigan that the alleged killer was still at large and likely armed. On Sunday, the suspect, 37-year old Cleveland resident Steve Stephens made a live broadcast on Facebook as he hunted for a potential victim to kill following the recent breakup with his girlfriend. Stephens, his mother told reporters, was "shooting people" because he was "made with his girlfriend". In the live broadcast of the murder and prior Facebook posts, Stephens referenced his ex-girlfriend as well as gambling debts in connection with his decision to murder a total stranger. "I lost everything I ever had due to gambling at the Cleveland Jack Casino and Erie Casino," Stephens wrote. Immediately after the murder, Stephens told viewers on Facebook Live that the breakup with his former girlfriend was to blame for his crime. "You see, the thing is, man, I'm 37 and all my ******* life, man, I've always been a ******* monster, man. "Always had to prove myself, always had to take the butts of people's jokes. Just killing man, and all because of this ***** called Joy Lane. "She put me at my pushing point, man. You know, I was living over there with her, just woke up Friday, I just couldn't take it no more, man." The victim, chosen apparently at random, was a 74-year old grandfather, Robert Godwin. Stephens claimed he had murdered others – more than a dozen – an assertion police have not verified. Following the murder, Stephens showed no signs of remorse. "I just left, and yeah, here I am, massacring," Stephens laughed in the live broadcast. Police have offered a $50,000 reward for tips leading to Stephens’ arrest. The FBI has joined local authorities in the manhunt. ------------------------------------------------ Subscribe to this Daily Israel Report: http://www.israelnationalnews.com/Subscribe/ | |
