1. 'HADAR FOUGHT ON BEHALF OF THE NATION, WE MUST BRING HIM BACK'
by Benny Toker
Rabbi Itamar Heikin, principal of the AMIT school in Modi'in and teacher of Hadar Goldin called upon the government on Tuesday to return Goldin's body to Israel and end four years in Hamas captivity.
Goldin was killed by Hamas terrorists during the 2014 Gaza conflict. Along with Oron Shaul, another IDF soldier murdered by Hamas, Goldin's body has been held in Gaza since his death.
Speaking to Arutz Sheva, Rabbi Heikin said those supporting the efforts of the Goldin family to return their son's body must be prepared for a potentially long struggle.
"There are two things we must do in the meantime – one is to build up [our] memory of Hadar and all the wonderful things about him and to incorporate [his traits] into our lives."
"The next thing we must do is to bring him and Oron home. They both went out on behalf of Israel, and the must be returned to be buried in Israel."
Beyond the effort to return the fallen soldiers' bodies, however, Rabbi Heikin emphasized the importance of helping their families.
"It's really not simple at all, I think, for anyone to stand in their shoes and understand the kind of terrible pain and feelings, that the little that they ask for is to see their son returned to Israel to be buried."
"Before [the Biblical] Jacob died he told Joseph not to bury him in Egypt. It is forbidden that Hadar be buried there in Gaza. It is a national responsibility to return any [fallen] soldier home."
Rabbi Heikin criticized the government's handling of the issue, saying the lack of decisive action only empowered Hamas. He also noted that the families of the fallen soldiers were not pushing for Israel to comply with Hamas demands of mass prisoner releases, as occurred in the return of Gilad Shalit.
"The family is not talked about getting him back in exchange for releasing terrorists. Let the terrorists stay in prison. Instead, [they're saying] don't give them [the terrorists] privileges or beneficial conditions until the boys are returned. So far the government has made a lot of mistakes in the negotiations".
2. HOW MANY HAREDIM ACTUALLY USE THE INTERNET?
by Michal Levy
For more than a decade, rabbinical leaders within the haredi community have sought to clamp down on internet usage by the haredi public, banning the use of unfiltered internet, and restricting the use of filtered internet connections to business needs.
Some leaders, particularly within Hassidic movements like Gur, have even issued strict rulings barring internet users from serving as witnesses, leading prayer services, or even from raising their own children.
Despite these efforts, however according to a report published by the Israel Democracy Institute on Tuesday, 54% of haredim admitted to regularly using computers and 41% said they surfed the web. Among the general population, by comparison, some 70% said they use the internet.
The number of haredi internet users, the report noted, has dramatically increased over the past 8 years.
The study also revealed that members of the haredi community are significantly less likely to hold a driver's license, with only 43% of haredim possessing a license, compared to 79% of the general population.
3. NO MATTER WHO WINS, FSILOTUS WILL BE A JEW
by Gil Ronen
No matter who wins in November, the First Son-in-Law of the United States (FSILOTUS) will be a Jew. The only question is will he be Orthodox or Conservative?
Ivanka Trump's husband, Jared Kushner, 35, is principal owner of the real estate holding and development company Kushner Properties, and the newspaper publishing company the New York Observer. He is the eldest son of Seryl (born Stadtmauer) and real estate developer Charles Kushner. He has a brother, Joshua, who is also a businessman, and two sisters, Nicole and Dara.
In 2007, at the age of 26, he made what was the most expensive single-building property purchase in US history, when he bought 666 Fifth Avenue for $1.8 billion.
Kushner was raised Orthodox in New Jersey.
Chelsea Clinton's husband, Marc Mezvinsky, is the son of former Democratic members of Congress Marjorie Margolies-Mezvinsky (PA) and Edward Mezvinsky (Iowa), and was raised in the Conservative Jewish tradition.
He worked for eight years as an investment banker at Goldman Sachs and in 2011, co-founded a Manhattan-based hedge fund with two partners.
He and Chelsea met as children when the Clintons and Mezvinskys were on a Renaissance Weekend retreat in Hilton Head Island, South Carolina. They first were reported to be a couple in 2005, and were married in an interfaith ceremony in Rhinebeck, New York, in 2010.
Clinton and Mezvinsky have a daughter, Charlotte, who is almost 2 years old, and a son, Aidan, who was born in June.
Some have noticed that the abbreviated title FSILOTUS is reminiscent of the Yiddish term "aftselachis," which means "to do something just for spite". What this means in cosmic and karmatic terms is not yet clear, but it must mean something.
4. BABY'S FUTURE TO BE DETERMINED BY DNA TEST
by Shai Landesman
The Tel Aviv District court ruled this morning (Tuesday) that an Israeli woman who had landed at Ben-Gurion airport and looked to enter the country with a baby girl from Sri Lanka, will have to undergo a DNA test to establish that she's the baby's mother.
The woman claims that she's the baby's biological mother. The baby's fate will be determined by the test. It won't be deported for now.
The Israeli woman, from Ramat Gan, landed in Israel on Saturday with a year-old baby. She claims that she gave birth to the baby in Sri Lanka but immigration authorities want to deport it, claiming that the woman refuses to undergo DNA testing.
The woman, for her part, claims that she didn't refuse, but had only insisted that the test be administered in Israel. District court judge Ruth Lavhar Sharon ruled that the woman must appear in court and submit to a blood test.
The court ruled that the test be administered today, and the baby will not be admitted into the country until the results come back. The judge leveled serious criticism at the woman for her conduct and her refusal to undergo the test until today.
"I promise to go through the test today," the woman declared after the ruling, "I have been made aware that the results will be back by Friday night. I understand that if the results are negative there will be no need for further court rulings and the baby will be deported."
5. SEVEN PEOPLE LIGHTLY HURT IN DRONE CRASH
by Arutz Sheva Staff
Seven people were lightly injured from smoke inhalation when a drone crashed into an abandoned house in the village of Zalfa near Umm al-Fahm in the north. It appears the drone was being used for spraying pesticides on nearby fields.
Residents of the area reported heavy smoke coming from the building after the crash. There was also some concern that people were in the house, but firefighters arriving at the scene quickly ascertained that the structure was empty.
Aircraft crash investigators from the Transport Ministry are on their way to the area to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash.
6. POTENTIAL WATER SHORTAGE IN DEAD SEA AREA
by Ido Ben Porat
Head of the Civil Administration in Judea and Samaria, Brigadier-General Achvat Ben-Hur, warns "Mekorot" company CEO Shimon Ben Hemo and Water Authority head Alexander Kushnir of severe water shortages that would result from the failure of the "Jericho 5" water well.
Ben-Hur explained that at this juncture Jericho 5 is not active, and must be repaired immediately. He claims that the well's inactivity will cause a 40% shortage in the water supply for the Dead Sea area.
Such a large-scale decrease in the water supply can greatly damage agriculture in the northern Dead Sea area and the economy in the Megillot Regional Council.
"We've now been told that Jericho 5 is inactive," wrote the head of the Civil Administration in a letter, "this situation can have severe consequences, including a 40% shortage in water supply to Megillot Regional Council and widespread water shortages in Jericho and its surroundings.
"Though the shortage would mainly affect agriculture and not drinking water, this would be a severe hit for the Israeli and Palestinian economies which rely on the area's agriculture," warned Brig. Gen. Ben-Hur, and went on to demand that the infrastructure company "give this issue top priority, pooling all resources to bring Jericho 5 to full operational capacity ASAP."
7. UN AID AGENCY OFFICIAL COLLABORATED WITH HAMAS
by Uzi Baruch
Cleared for publication: In July, the Shin Bet and the Israel Police arrested Wahid Abdallah Borsh, 38, of Jabaliya in Gaza , on suspicion he used his position in the UN Development Program (UNDP), to help Hamas.
The UNDP agency runs restoration and development projects for the population in Gaza, including restoration work on houses damaged during military engagements.
Wahid Borsh worked as an engineer in the agency since 2003. He was in charge of demolition of houses that were destroyed and clearing debris from the construction sites.
Borsh's interrogation by the Shin Bet yielded the revelation that in 2014 he was instructed by a senior Hamas official to conduct his work in the UNDP in such a way as to enable Hamas to gain the maximum benefit from it.
Borsh then did various things to help the Hamas. In 2015, he helped build a marina for the use of Hamas' military wing in the north of the Gaza Strip, using UNDP resources.
The investigators also discovered that within the framework of construction project of which Borsh was in charge in 2015, he lobbied his supervisors to give higher priority to areas in which senior Hamas officials lived, as he'd been asked to do by Hamas.
In addition, when UNDP operations would reveal weapons depots or tunnel entrances, Borsh ensured Hamas would be able to arrive and take control of the area immediately, contrary to UNDP regulations.
Borsh told investigators about additional Hamas operatives who are involved in humanitarian aid operations, and gave over information regarding Hamas bases, weapons depots and tunnels.
An indictment was filed against him today in the Be'er Sheva district court.
The Foreign Ministry has sent information about the arrest of their erstewhile employee to the UN Secretary-General's office and the heads of the UNDP organization in New York.
"We expect the UN and especially the UNDP to issue a strong condemnation of the Hamas for taking advantage of the aid organizations. We also expect concrete action to be taken to ensure that the humanitarian aid resources reach the ones who need it and not Hamas terror mongers," the Foreign Ministry statement read.
Last week it was revealed that the head of the Gaza branch of the World Vision charity organization had been using his position to transfer funds to Hamas terrorists.
8. TRUMP TAKES DIFFERENT APPROACH TO PROTESTERS AT DETROIT SPEECH
by Shai Landesman
[youtube:2017961]
Is the long-awaited "pivot" from Donald Trump beginning?
The Republican presidential nominee ran an aggressive campaign in the primaries, often directly challenging protesters who came to his rallies, calling for security (or the crowd) to throw them out.
Trump's supporters within the Republican party have been saying that after his victory in the primaries, he will execute the traditional "pivot to the general", in which a candidate changes his or her tactics from the primaries, taking a more moderate tack to appeal to a wider base of voters for the general election.
Last night (Monday) Mr. Trump delivered a speech on the subject of the economy in poverty-stricken Detroit, a location choice that was sure to bring many protesters. The protesters did indeed show up, heckling and interrupting Trump repeatedly throughout his speech. Contrary to his practice during primary season, Trump simply ignored them, allowing security to throw them out without any prompting by the candidate.
