1. MAJOR LEGAL VICTORY AGAINST TERROR
by Tal Polon
A US court ruled this week that Iran and Syria must pay the parents of a baby murdered in a terror attack a sum of 178 million dollars.
The terror attack in question happened in 2014 at a Jerusalem light rail station, when a Hamas terrorist rammed his car into the stroller of baby Chaya Zissel Braun Hy"d, who was then only three months old. She was murdered, as was another woman at the scene. Chaya's father, Shmuel was badly wounded.
Afterward, Chaya's parents took it upon themselves to wage a legal battle against terror.
Since their daughter had American citizenship, they filed suit in an American court against Iran and Syria, on grounds that these countries fund Hamas.
Now, the parents' battle has born fruit.
Attorney Nitsana Darshan-Leitner, whose Tel Aviv-based Law Center, Shurat HaDin, represented the Braun family in court, praised the ruling. "The criminal regimes in Tehran and Damascus are the biggest state sponsors of terrorism is the world. This judgement sends a clear message that there is a very heavy price to be paid for financing terrorism and spilling innocent blood in the streets of Jerusalem. Shurat HaDin will relentlessly pursue the Islamic Republic and Syria through all legal avenues in order to ensure that these judgements are enforced and that the terror victims achieve a measure of justice."

Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu met with Norwegian Minister of Foreign Affairs Børge Brende today (Thursday) to sign an Israel-Norway joint bilateral declaration of intent for research and development.
After the signing, Brende expressed condolences to the people of Israel following Sunday's ramming attack in Jerusalem, to which Netanyahu responded, "We're all faced here with a great challenge against the forces of terrorism, that not only seek to destroy Israel, but seek of course to render any possibility for peace totally hopeless.
"There are other such efforts that render peace hopeless, and one of them is the Paris Conference. It's a rigged conference, rigged by the Palestinians with French auspices, to adopt additional anti-Israeli stances. This pushes peace backwards, it's not going to obligate us. It's a relic of the past, a last gasp of the past before the future sets in."
Brende then responded, "We will be there, but we'll make sure there's a nuanced outcome."

A delegation of ambassadors and senior diplomats from the European Union expressed thei solidarity in Israel at a series of events held in Jerusalem Wednesday by The Israel Project (TIP), following Sunday's terrorist car ramming attack in which four soldiers were killed.
The events were held under the slogan "United Against Terror," and were designed to bring the various nations which have been affected by terrorism together.
EU Ambassador to Israel Lars Faarborg-Andersen compared Sunday's ramming attack with similar attacks which have taken place in Europe recently:
"We are here in solidarity with the victims and the families of this terrible terror incident that took place a couple days ago in Jerusalem and took the lives of four young people in a totally meaningless way." Ambassador Faarborg-Andersen said. "I think, as your truck also demonstrates, that terrorism strikes everywhere - Nice, Jerusalem, Berlin. This is the whole point. Nobody is free from terror, irrespective of where we happen to be on the planet. That's the reason why it is so necessary for all of us to show solidarity internationally and cross-border [sic] in fighting this despicable phenomenon which we have so tragically seen strike here again in Jerusalem."
"Our hearts and thoughts go out, of course, to the victims and their bereaved families. And I think that we collectively must do all we can to fight this scourge and end these meaningless and tragic deaths."
Tony Kay, the Deputy British Ambassador to Israel said: "The scourge of terrorism blights us all and is never justified under any circumstances."
French First Secretary Jean Marie Druette said that France faces similar terrorist threats to Israel. "France, like Israel, has been dealing for many years with the threat of terror. We know what it is. We show solidarity and stand strong together with you in the uncompromising fight against this shocking phenomenon."
Italian Ambassador to Israel Francesco M. Talò said that every western country is a potential target for terrorism. "We have to be united. That's why I'm here, because when we are hit by terrorists we are hit altogether. It can happen in Jerusalem, in Berlin, in Paris, in Italy maybe - up until now it didn't happen in Italy – but we know that we are always victims… we have to fight altogether, and we will win altogether, because the barbarians will not prevail."
TIP Vice-President Lior Weintraub praised the events and said that they show that Israel is not alone in its battle against terrorism. "The West, Israel included, stands strong and united against terror in all of its manifestations. This initiative demonstrates the great solidarity and empathy that Israel has received across the globe during the current wave of terror… Just as Israel stands with the rest of the world in the face of terrorism, we call on the world to continue standing with Israel."

4. POLICE: SALAH TO TRIAL FOR INCITEMENT
by Mordechai Sones
Police announced that it will recommend prosecution of Sheikh Raed Salah on suspicion of incitement.
Evidence collected against Salach indicates inflammatory actions and support for the Islamic Movement of which he is a member, considered an illegal association.
Police said that the offenses attributed to Salah constitute incitement to violence and terrorism and also support of, membership in, or activity for an illegal association.
The investigation was triggered by media reports, websites, and social networks on several occasions, all of which occurred after the Movement's being declared illegal.
The reports included Salah's statements regarding the existence of the movement and his role in it despite its having been declared illegal, and about a variety of issues at the core of the movement's worldview.
The investigation dealt with some of the statements about which the requested approval was given by the State Attorney's Office, after the range of evidentiary material pointed to the suspicion of incitement and support for the organization.
Salah was questioned under warning and other investigative procedures were carried out which seemed to establish an evidentiary foundation for the commitment of the offenses attributed to him.
When the investigation concluded, police sent their findings to the Haifa District Attorney's Office, which accompanied the process, for review and decision.
5. HAMAS HACKS SOLDIERS' PHONES BY POSING AS WOMEN
by JTA
Operatives for the Hamas terrorist group hacked into dozens of Israeli combat soldiers' cellphones by posing as attractive Israeli women on Facebook.
Using Israeli women's photos and identities stolen from social media, the operatives would initiate personal and intimate relationships with the soldiers and then ask them to download what they said was an application in order to video chat, according to reports.
The fake app gave Hamas control over the soldiers' phones, allowing activation by the terrorist group of the camera and microphone, and access to contacts, videos and photos, as well as Whatsapp conversations and emails. The soldiers were not aware that their phones had been hacked.
The hacks were discovered following investigations by the Shin Bet security service and the Israel Defense Forces' Information Security Department and Cyber Defense Unit. The Shin Bet and IDF said the damage was minimal and believe all of the affected phones have been identified, according to Ynet. Most of the soldiers hacked were low level.
Hamas also gathered intelligence by following soldiers on social media and collecting the sensitive information they posted publicly, The Times of Israel reported, citing an unnamed IDF officer.
Current and former soldiers have hundreds of Facebook and Whatsapp groups to stay in contact.
6. J'LEM MARATHON OFFERS NEW TRAINING TECHNOLOGY TO PREPARE RUNNERS
by Arutz Sheva Staff
With the seventh annual Jerusalem International Marathon just over two months away, a record number of runners around the world are in training, with more than 1,200 runners – more than twice as many than at this stage last year – already registered. They will arrive in Israel from over 40 countries, in addition to the thousands of Israelis already signed up to take part. The event will include a Full Marathon, Half Marathon, 10km and a number of shorter family and fun runs.
In addition, runners who register are being offered a little extra help in training for the breathtaking Jerusalem Marathon course, which not only allows runners to take in the tremendous sights of the modern and old neighborhoods of the city, but tests their stamina with its steep inclines and hills. This year, runners who register before February 1, 2017 (February 9, 2017 in Israel) will receive a MilestonePod.
The MilestonePod is a small, easy-to-use device that clips onto the runner's shoe. It automatically tracks running metrics such as foot strikes, cadence and rate of impact and also provides performance data, including time, pace, distance and calories burned. There are no buttons, no re-charging needed and no GPS signal, but the device syncs quickly to the MilestonePod App, which is downloadable onto a smartphone or tablet.
Runners competing in the Full and Half Marathon will receive a MilestonePod for free, while those registered for the 10k or 5k will have the opportunity to purchase the Pod at a reduced rate.
The Marathon is an important event for tourism to the city with more than an estimated 10,000 extra hotel nights booked in the city around the event. In 2016, nearly 30,000 participated in the marathon with 2,600 runners coming from 65 countries around the world. The marathon began in 2011 with just 10,000 participants.
The men's record for the full marathon was set in 2014 and is held by Ronald Kimeli Kurgat of Kenya (2:16:09), and the women's record was set in 2016 and is held by Joan Jepchirchir Kigen of Kenya (2:38:30).
The start line is situated at Israel's parliament, the Knesset, and runners in the Full Marathon will then loop around the Givat Ram campus of the Hebrew University, pass alongside the Valley of the Cross, and through various neighborhoods on their way up to Hebrew University's Mount Scopus campus. The route then descends to the historic Old City, taking runners through Jaffa Gate and the Armenian Quarter and out Zion Gate, on their way to the Jerusalem Forest. The race's finishing point is in Sacher Park.
7. WATCH: TRUMP SAYS 'SICK' OPPONENTS PUT TOGETHER REPORT
by Gary Willig

President-elect Donald Trump held a press conference in Manhattan Wednesday morning in which he addressed reports that Russia had potentially damaging information which it could use to blackmail him.
Trump called the reports "nonsense,"
"A thing like that should never have been written, should never been had, and should never have been released," he said, adding that the news organizations which first published the reports sought to delegitimize his election and his presidency.
"I read the information it's all fake news it didn't happen and it was gotten by opponents of ours, as you know because you reported it and so did many of the other people, it was a group of opponents that got together, sick people, and they put that crap together." he said.
Trump said for the first time that he believed Russia was behind the hacking of the Democratic National Committee (DNC). "I think it was Russia," Trump said.
However, Trump said that the DNC was "open to be hacked," unlike the Republican National Committee, which he said properly protected its servers.
He dismissed claims that Russian President Vladimir Putin preferred him to former Democratic Presidential Candidate Hillary Clinton. "If Putin likes Donald Trump, I consider that an asset not a liability."
However, Trump said that if he does not know if he would get along with Putin once he takes office. "I hope I do. And if I don't, do you honestly believe that Hillary would be tougher on Putin than me?"
Trump added that he has no loans or debts with Russia.
8. SWEDISH EMBASSY TO LAUNCH RAOUL WALLENBERG YOUTUBE CHANNEL
by Mordechai Sones
[youtube:2023186]
The Embassy of Sweden in Israel is about to launch a special Youtube channel in memory of Raoul Wallenberg, a Righteous among the Nations. The channel will be launched at a special event which will take place in the Residence of the Ambassador of Sweden in Herzliyya Pituah, on the 17th of January; the date of Wallenberg's disappearance. One of the main goals of the project is to perpetuate the memory and works of Raoul Wallenberg, to spread to a broad audience the stories of the people who were saved thanks to him; to remember, and preserve the stories for generations to come.
At this stage, four videos will be uploaded to the channel that tell the stories of persons who survived the Holocaust thanks to Wallenberg's actions. They tell their personal story to the camera, describe how they survived the Holocaust and reveal how they were saved by Wallenberg. At a later stage, the Embassy of Sweden in Israel would like to develop this project and they would like to meet with more Holocaust survivors who were saved by Wallenberg.
Raoul Wallenberg was a Swedish diplomat who served in Budapest during the Second World War, and who helped tens of thousands of Jews to escape Nazi-occupied Hungary. He took several measures to rescue Jews: the Swedish Government had issued "Schutzpasses" and he gave them to thousands of Jews, he established protected "Swedish houses" that served as safe havens for Jews, he put pressure on Nazi and Hungarian officials to stop the deportation trains to Auschwitz, and he also confronted men of the SS and stopped expulsions of Jews with his own body.
At the end of 2016, the Swedish Tax Authority declared Raoul Wallenberg deceased after having been missing for 71 years. The Ambassador of Sweden to Israel, Carl Magnus Nesser, said: "The story of Raoul Wallenberg illustrates the strong bond between the Swedish people and the Jewish people. On the day which marks his disappearance, we decided to organize an event in his memory, for a person who did so much to rescue Jews. We also decided to launch a special YouTube-channel in his memory, in order to preserve his legacy and to hear more about how these persons survived thanks to Wallenberg, who has been given the title "Righteous among the Nations". The testimonies that the survivors share in front of the camera are moving and touch the heart of all of us. We hope that more Jews who survived the Holocaust thanks to Raoul Wallenberg will get in touch with us and tell their unique stories".
