NETANYAHU, KAHLON MEET AS COALITION CRISIS CONTINUES by Hezki Baruch Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu and Finance Minister Moshe Kahlon (Kulanu) are meeting in Netanyahu's office to discuss the crisis over the formation of the Israel Public Broadcasting Corporation (IPBC) after a meeting with the coalition's other party heads. The meeting was attended by several party heads but Health Minister Yakov Litzman (UTJ) suggested dismissing the meeting to leave Kahlon and Netanyahu alone. Interior Minister Aryeh Deri (Shas) also attended the meeting. Previously, Deri managed to help Kahlon and Netanyahu work out an agreement. This agreement was the one Netanyahu reneged on last Saturday night. However, this time Deri took Litzman's lead and left the room. The previous deal allowed the Israel Public Broadcasting Corporation to be created, on condition that it be supervised by Netanyahu's "Supervisory Law." The disagreement is a result of Kahlon's insistence on closing the existing Israel Broadcasting Authority and creating the Israel Public Broadcasting Corporation to take its place. Netanyahu initially agreed to this plan, but last Saturday night wrote on Facebook, "I have changed my mind after a meeting held with Israel Broadcasting Authority workers on Friday... Managing the Israel Broadcasting Authority is millions of shekels cheaper than creating the Israel Public Broadcasting Corporation. So why do we need the corporation?" On Sunday morning, Netanyahu spoke at a meeting with Likud officials and told them there was "nothing new" and he would "update when there is something new." Coalition Chairman David Bitan (Likud) warned on Sunday that if Kahlon does not "give up a bit of his ego," new elections will be held. 2. CONFLICT ARISES BETWEEN FRANKFURT RABBIS AND CHABAD by JTA The umbrella group representing the Jewish community of Frankfurt is distancing itself from the city’s Chabad-Lubavitch chapter following a series of alleged instances of "disrespect" evinced against local non-Chabad rabbis. In an open letter published March 20, the Jewish Community of Frankfurt am Main group wrote that the city’s synagogues will no longer provide rooms for Chabad events. The letter cites "increasingly aggressive behavior" and "insults" from Chabad rabbis aimed at two local rabbis, Avichai Apel and Julian Chaim-Soussan. Apel was hired as a replacement for Rabbi Menachem Halevi Klein, who retired in 2015 after heading the Orthodox Westend Synagogue for 21 years. The Chabad Frankfurt am Main chapter has been holding its services and housing its yeshiva in the Westend Synagogue. "[It] appears, unfortunately, that one party [in the conflict] expected to be able to demand new roles within the community upon the retirement of Rabbi Klein," read an editorial on the website Honestly Concerned, an Israel advocacy organization based in Frankfurt. Among other things, Chabad leaders are accused of barring Apel and Chaim-Soussan from accessing the bimah on Purim and ignoring Apel at a public menorah lighting last Hanukkah. The Honestly Concerned editorial also described "the interruption of a Sabbath service, completely inappropriate yelling, a scene that shocked members of the community and led to a deepening of splits in the community." Chabad leadership has yet to respond to the letter. "Jewish and religious life in Frankfurt was possible before Chabad and we are ensuring that it will continue to be possible without the involvement of Chabad," the Frankfurt group said in its letter. 3. IRANIAN BILL WOULD LABEL CIA, US ARMY AS TERRORIST GROUPS by AFP Iran said Sunday it will impose sanctions on 15 US companies for supporting Israel's "terrorist actions" as part of reprisals for the increasing pressure being announced by Washington lawmakers. The decision, which is largely symbolic since the firms do not do business with Iran, come two days after the US announced new sanctions against groups and individuals that it accuses of collaborating with Iran's nuclear weapons program. The sanctions target firms that provide arms and equipment to Israel "for use against the Palestinians", IRNA said. "All transactions with these firms are forbidden, their assets will be seized and their officials will not be able to obtain a visa," it added. The list included defense firms such as United Technologies, Military Armament Corporation and Bushmaster Firearms International, as well as Re/Max Real Estate, which Tehran accuses of "buying and selling homes in settlements located in the occupied territories". In another tit-for-tat move, Iran's parliamentary foreign affairs committee said it would propose a new law labeling the US army and CIA as terrorist groups. The announcement was a response to a new bill put forward by US lawmakers that would see Iran's Revolutionary Guards listed as a terrorist organization. "The American army is present in numerous regional crises such as Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria and Yemen and provides vast support to terrorist groups," said Alaeddin Boroujerdi, president of the committee, according to a state television report. Tensions have mounted between Tehran and Washington since US President Donald Trump took office in January. Trump has repeatedly criticized a July 2015 deal between Iran and world powers that saw the Islamic republic curb its nuclear program in exchange for sanctions relief. Washington last month imposed new sanctions on individuals and companies supporting Iran's ballistic missile program and on its elite Revolutionary Guards. On Friday, it announced the latest sanctions against entities accused of collaborating with the weapons programs of Iran and North Korea. 4. 1 DEAD, 14 WOUNDED IN NIGHTCLUB SHOOTING by Chana Roberts [youtube:2026269] Cincinnati Police reported one person dead and fourteen injured following a shooting attack just after 1 a.m. at the city's Cameo Nightclub. Cincinnati Police Department Sergeant Eric Franz told ABC News, "There was a shooting here this morning around one o'clock in the morning. It's a large and complicated homicide scene. "At this point we have multiple witnesses we're interviewing and we have nobody in custody. "We've got a really large scene at multiple hospitals." Assistant Police Chief Paul Neudigate tweeted that as far as the police know, there was only one shooter. He also said the motive was unclear but "there are no indications this incident is terrorism related." Speaking to WLWT-TV, Neudigate said, "We are in the middle of a very horrific situation that occurred at the nightclub with multiple victims. It's going to be a long night for our homicide units to investigate. Many of the witnesses fled, but everyone that we can identify is being interviewed." However, at an earlier press conference Police Captain Kimberly Williams had said there were multiple shooters. "At this point it's unclear exactly what instigated the shooting," Williams told reporters. "We believe that there were at least a couple of shooters involved." "I don't want to make speculations on what happened, but just keep an eye on your young people ... I don’t know if this had to do with an argument or neighborhood issues or what. Just, I'm asking parents ... know what your young people are doing," Williams said, adding that the shooting occurred inside the nightclub. Cameo Nightclub regularly hires policemen to provide extra security. At the time of the attack, two police officers were stationed at the club's entrance and another two were stationed in the parking lot. University of Cincinnati Medical Center spokeswoman Kelly Martin told ABC News the hospital admitted three victims in serious condition, one in critical condition, and four more in stable condition. A Bethesda North Hospital spokesperson told the channel it admitted two patients related to the shooting, but did not provide details. Christ Hospital said they admitted two individuals with minor injuries from the shooting. Several of the victims are currently undergoing surgery. 5. MASSIVE 'LAND DAY' EVENT TO BE HELD IN KAFR MALIK by Dalit Halevi Islamic and Palestinian Authority groups near Ramallah announced on Saturday that their "Land Day" ceremonies on March 31 would be held near the Ramallah-area Arab towns of Kafr Malik and al-Mar'yaer. The locations were chosen to express opposition to Israeli towns in the areas of Kafr Malik, al-Mar'yaer, and Khirbet Abu Falah. The ceremonies will include mass prayer for lands "threatened" by Israel in opposition to the Arabs' plans for the area. Islamic terror groups and the PA said in a statement, "The crimes of the Israeli occupation will not deter our nation from its plan to fight to eliminate the problem, while protecting its holy places and rights to use force. We will not relent until we achieve victory." 6. NETANYAHU THANKS BRITAIN FOR CHANGING POSITION by Mordechai Sones Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu opened the weekly cabinet meeting this morning (Sunday), referring to his meeting this weekend with British Prime Minister Theresa May. "On Friday, I spoke with British Prime Minister Theresa May. I sent her condolences on behalf of all the citizens of Israel and the government of Israel to the families of those murdered and of course, my best wishes for the wounded's recovery," Netanyahu said. "I told her that we in Israel have faced terrorist ramming attacks and stabbings, and we understand that the terror that strikes us is the terror that strikes in London and strikes in Brussels and strikes in Nice and elsewhere in the world ... It is the terror of radical Islam that we have to work together against it everywhere, in order to defeat it. We will defeat it much faster if we work together," said the Prime Minister. Netanyahu also said that he took advantage of the conversation to thank May for changing Britain's position on the UN Human Rights Council. "I also thanked her for the intention that was actually implemented a few hours later at the Human Rights Council, as this strange UN body is called, about the change in their vote and, more importantly, about the important speech that was delivered there by the British representatives, and what was said there that if the bias against Israel continues in this body, then Britain will consistently oppose all decisions ... I think this is an important sign in the direction we want to encourage the international community to follow. We think it is time to start changing the distorted attitude against Israel in international bodies." Netanyahu referred to his official China visit last week, during which Israeli companies signed deals with Chinese companies. "The report that we received from the Foreign Trade Administration in the Ministry of Economics is that some 25 Israeli companies signed deals worth $2 billion during the visit, mainly in health, agriculture, water, and of course Chinese capital investment in Israeli funds. "During the visit, China granted Israel unique status that no other country in the world enjoys as a central partner in innovation development. China has a similar, but different, relationship with another country - with Switzerland - and they stress the importance they attribute to Israel's connection to technology and innovation," Netanyahu added. The Prime Minister said that at his request the Chinese president agreed to examine the question of its specific investment policy for Israel. "China has recently decided to limit, to halt its external investments for its own reasons - I am talking about in the world - not Israel - in general. And in light of my request, the Chinese president said he is willing to examine Israel's exclusion, meaning that Chinese investments in high-tech and other sectors in Israel will continue. "I have to say that we were received with real warmth," Netanyahu said. "It was clear from all the signs - even in the Chinese economic sector, where it should be said that it is a sector guided by the government, and in all my contacts, with ministers, in ceremonies, which are extremely important in China, it was discernible that China is intensifying its ties with Israel, and that these developments are very important, both for the Israeli economy and for the citizens of Israel, as well as for the strengthening of the State of Israel in the world, the superpowers, and many other countries. " The Prime Minister denied reports about an upcoming agreement with the United States regarding Judea and Samaria construction: "In recent days there have been reports in the media about alleged summaries of our discussions with the White House regarding settlement construction. I want to clarify that there are many inaccuracies in these reports. I will not go into details, our talks with the White House continue - I hope they will end soon." 7. HAMAS SUPPORTERS CALL FOR 'REVENGE' AGAINST ISRAEL by AFP Thousands of Hamas supporters on Saturday called for "revenge" during the Gaza funeral of an official from the Palestinian Islamist movement gunned down the previous day. "Revenge, revenge!" called participants at the procession for Mazen Faqha, 38, who was shot dead by unknown gunmen in the Gaza Strip on Friday. Hamas-nominated attorney general Ismail Jaber on Saturday blamed Israel for the killing. "This assassination has the clear marks of Mossad," he said, referring to the Israel's spy agency. According to Israeli media, Faqha was responsible for cells of Hamas's military wing, the Ezzedine al-Qassam Brigades, in Judea and Samaria. Israel arrested Faqha and sentenced him to prison over suicide attacks which killed hundreds of Israelis during the second intifada, or uprising, between 2000 and 2005. He was released in 2011 along with more than 1,000 other terrorists in exchange for Gilad Shalit, and transferred to Gaza. Palestinian Authority leader Ismail Haniyeh and Gazan Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar headed the procession from the Shifa morgue to the Omari mosque, an AFP photographer said. Khalil al-Haya, a deputy to Sinwar, promised retaliation. "If the enemy thinks that this assassination will change the power balance, then it should know the minds of Qassam will be able to retaliate in kind," he said. 8.
