1. 'IT IS IMPOSSIBLE TO BE A RELIGIOUS NAVAL OFFICER NOW'
by Raphael Levy

Yishai, a 19 year old yeshiva student who had intended to enlist in the Israeli navy, told Arutz Sheva how the navy's conduct may lead to his giving up on the prestigious naval officer's course.

Yishai completed the orientation course a year ago, when he was in the 12th grade, but given his desire to attend a yeshiva before serving in the navy his draft application was rejected. He maintained regular contact with all of the relevant parties and offices to keep his dream of being a navy officer alive.

Two months ago, army officials made it clear to Yishai that if he wanted to keep his place in the course, he would have to choose between enlisting in March, or enlisting in October.

Yishai asked to be allowed to postpone his enlistment to March, 2018, in order to complete a full year of study in a yeshiva before his enlistment, as well as his desire to avoid being enlisted at a time when he might be forced to serve alongside women, whose recruitment occurs in October. The army agreed to Yishai's request.

He said that the Navy understood his desire to avoid serving alongside women, but a month later he was contacted and told of the new directive of the navy for mixed gender units.

Yishai said that the new directive is a step too far for him. "As a religious person, I cannot enter courses in this reality. The course is very physically demanding, with a lot of teamwork at sea and in tight conditions, and to do that with women is not possible for me as a religious man,"

According to Yishai, the number of female naval recruits is minimal, and that the solution which would allow the integration of female soldiers into the navy is to have separate times of recruitment for men and women. As a result, he is now considering dropping out of the course so as not to violate his religious convictions.

A Navy spokesperson denied that there has been a change in policy allowing the recruitment of women during the March recruitment season. According to the spokesperson, women are only recruited in October, and any soldier who wishes to avoid taking the course alongside women may do so in March.

2. 'TIME TO END JEWISH PRIVILEGE'
by David Rosenberg

Posters plastered across the University of Illinois at Chicago campus accusing American Jews of benefiting from "Jewish privilege" have rattled the local Jewish community amid a wave bomb threats and vandalism targeting Jewish institutions nationwide.

The posters reference the idea of "white privilege," a notion pushed by the American progressive-left claiming that disparities in social and economic outcomes between racial groups in the US can be attributed to discreet forms of racism favoring white individuals over minorities.

While calling for an end to "white privilege" the poster proceeds to suggest that white privilege is in fact largely "Jewish Privilege," mendaciously claiming that nine-tenths of America's richest 1% are Jewish.

"ENDING WHITE PRIVILEGE… STARTS WITH ENDING JEWISH PRIVILEGE"

"Jewish Americans make up 2% of the population. 44% of these Jewish Americans are in the top 1%," the poster reads.

While Jews do on average earn more than the national average, the percentage of Jews found among the top 1% of earners is far less than 44% of the Jewish population, and Jews do not make up anywhere near 90% of the top 1%. The 44% figure, which cites a 2009 study by the Pew Research Center, is in fact a misquote of the Pew report, which only shows that 46% of Jews earn more than $100,000 a year.

But in 2016 the threshold for the top 1% of income earners was far higher - $465,626 for an individual taxpayer according to the IRS, and $1,260,508 for a household, according to the Washington Center for Equitable Growth.

The poster also includes a pyramid, featuring 10 silhouettes on the top representing "The 1%", showing 9 of them with Stars of David. The remaining "99%" is shown below, with an additional line of silhouettes with Stars of David standing on top of a mass of smaller figures. A note on the side of the pyramid writes "Goyim not to scale" and then:

"If there were 1000 people in the United States…

"10 of them would be in the top 1%, 20 of them would be Jewish, 9 of them would be Jewish and in the top 1%. Is the 1% straight, white men? Or is the 1% Jewish?"

No organization or individuals have claimed responsibility for the posters, and it is unclear whether they are the products of members of the far-left or far-right.

The term "Jewish Privilege" has been employed both by white supremacists and anti-Israel elements on the far-left, including +972 Magazine.

UIC Chabad House President Eva Zeltser, who publicized the discovery of the posters, called upon the university's dean of students to act against such expressions of anti-Semitism.

"Things like these posters are actively posted to catalyze anti-Semitism and increase hate towards Jews," Zeltser wrote.

In response, school administrators issued a statement calling on students to avoid "prejudice or stereotypes".

"Today, anti-Semitic posters were found on campus that defame, insult and negatively portray Jewish members of our campus community. Such actions do not reflect the values we hold as a community. Acts that invoke hatred or violence toward members of our community will not be tolerated on our campus."

"As we investigate this recent event, we strongly encourage all members of our university to exercise their right to free speech in a manner that recognizes these principles and avoids prejudice or stereotypes."

3. MAALE ADUMIM MAYOR TO PM: DON'T MISS THIS HISTORIC OPPORTUNITY
by Ido ben Porat

Public pressure is mounting on PM Netanyahu and Education Minister Naftali Bennett not to allow an additional postponement of the vote on the bill to apply sovereignty to Maale Adumim.

At the moment, the bill is to go on Sunday to deliberations and a vote in the Knesset Law Committee. However, it is possible that the Prime Minister will request to delay the vote by several days, as he has done in recent months.

Maale Adumim Mayor Benny Kashriel said today, Friday, to Netanyahu and Bennett: " Don't delay the vote. Continue on your path as leaders of Zionism. It's only in your hands. Don't miss the historic opportunity."

Chairman of the Jewish Home party in Maale Adumim, Nuriel Gatz, called earlier for Jewish Home representatives in the Knesset and government to take action, saying that "residents of Maale Adumim and settlement as a whole turn their eyes to the Jewish Home."

"Dear Naftali Bennett, Ayelet Shaked, and Uri Ariel, it is forbidden this time to give up and postpone the vote in the Law Committee. When you stand steadfast, nobody can coerce us. They've already been talking for 50 years about 'the correct and proper timing,' and the time has come for action, as the timing will never be perfect. Maale Adumim enjoys a national consensus, Foot-dragging on the part of Likud doesn't have to bother us," Gatz said.

The 2017 Jerusalem Marathon marks 50 years since the reunification of the capital and is the largest marathon to ever take place in the city, breaking records both in the numbers of Israeli and foreign participants with over 30,000 marathon runners.
Most notably among them is Olympic judoka medalist Ori Sasson who won the bronze medal in Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro in 2016. Also representing Israel at the 2015 European Games in Baku, Azerbaijan in judo in the +100 kg (+220 lbs.) category, Sasson won a silver medal for Israel in the inaugural European Games. In doing so he won the silver medal in the 2015 European Judo Championship. True to August 2016, he is rated third in the world for this weight.
Sasson's name made international headlines during the Rio de Janeiro Summer Olympics when he defeated Egyptian judoka Islam El Shahaby in the first round. When the match concluded, Sasson tried to shake his opponent's hand, but El Shahaby refused.
Ori Sasson ran together with Israel's veteran hero, from Operation Tzuk Eitan, Yehuda Yitchak Hayisraeli, who was injured trying to save Hadar

Goldin z'l. Yehuda's comrades came out to join him and Ori in supporting Team Shalva.
Ori recently donated his jacket, worn when he won his Olympic medal, to establish the Ori Sasson judo program at Shalva. Ori said that 'I couldn't imagine being part of a more exciting group in this momentous event in our Capital city'. With over 500 runners who travelled from around the world to support Shalva. Shalva National Center in Jerusalem serves as a model and paradigm of caring for individuals with special needs. Shalva was founded 26 years ago with the belief that the responsibility of caring for children with special needs is not only that of the family into which the child was born. 'I personally connected to this value which is why, this past year, I teamed up with Shalva and donated the judo suit I wore during the Olympic Games to benefit children with special needs. These people aspire to be full-fledged members of society, and they are deserving of our support' said Sasson.
Kalman Samuels, Founder and President at Shalva, expresses: "Seeing thousands of people led by a world-famous Olympic medalist, running for the sacred purposes of integration, inclusion and acceptance is extremely moving, and I'm hopeful that many others will take the initiative and join Team Shalva in the 2018 Jerusalem Marathon.

5. SYRIA THREATENS RESPONSE TO 'ZIONIST AGGRESION'
by Gary Willig

The Syrian army announced that four Israeli aircraft had entered Syrian airspace overnight and struck a military target near the ancient city of Palmyra.

Syria claimed that it shot down one of the four planes. "Four Israeli planes penetrated our air space at 2:40 AM via Lebanese territory and hit a military target on the way to Palmyra," the army said in a statement carried by state news agency SANA.

"Our air defense engaged them and shot down one warplane over occupied territory, hit another one and forced the rest to flee," the statement added.

The IDF confirmed that its aircraft were fired upon over Syria Thursday night. However, the IDF stated that the Arrow-3 missile defense system protected the planes from damage.

The IDF statement said that "several anti-aircraft missiles were launched from Syria during the operation. One of the missiles was intercepted by the air defense systems of the IDF."

An explosion from a Syrian anti-aircraft missile was heard in the city of Modiin south of Tel Aviv in central Israel. Two of the missiles reportedly landed in Israel, while a third reportedly landed in Jordan.

Footage from the wreckage of one of the anti-aircraft missiles circulated on social media Friday morning

Syria threatened to respond harshly to the air strike. "This flagrant attack is part of the Zionist enemy's persistent efforts to support the terrorist gangs of ISIS," the Syrian army said.

"It will be responded to directly with all possible means," it added.

6. MAN PROPOSES DURING JERUSALEM MARATHON
by Arutz Sheva Staff

At the end of their run in the Seventh Jerusalem International Marathon, Israeli runner Ofer Lechner took the opportunity to propose to his girlfriend and running partner Aviva Leibowitz - and she accepted.

Hearing the proposal over the loudspeaker ahead of starting his own run, a visibly moved Mayor of Jerusalem, Nir Barkat, went over to congratulate the happy couple. He wished them many more years of love and joint runs in the Jerusalem marathon.

A record of more than 30,000 people, including an all-time high of 3,500 runners from 70 countries around the world, participated in the Seventh International Jerusalem Marathon this morning, Friday 17 March, 2016.

The first Jerusalem International Marathon was held in 2010 with just 10,000 participants, 300 of whom were from abroad.

7. 'THIS WILL END IN BAPTISM AND CONVERSION'
by Gary Willig

The Yad L'Achim anti-assimilation organization slammed a report by Channel 20 that Jewish schoolchildren from an elementary school in Caesarea were forced to bow in prayer in a Mosque during a school trip to Jisr az-Zarqa, an Arab-Israeli town north of Caesarea.

"Assimilation in Israel has taken on a new form. This craving for multiculturalism in Israel is making people insane," said the leaders of Ya L'Achim.

They added: "this incident joins a bizarre bill which was placed on the table in the Knesset last weekend, 'chag hachagim' (holiday of holidays). Jewish identity and the fundamental values of the Jewish people are attacked over and over again here in Israel, out of a desire for tolerance of other religions."

They warned that the focus on multiculturalism would "end in baptism and conversions."

The incident was brought by horrified parents of the children who were forced to bow in the Mosque.

One mother told Channel 20, "It's repulsive. I cannot believe that this kind of thing happens in Israel. Where was the Ministry of Education? Is there any supervision of what's being fed to our children?"

Another parent said, "We're shocked. I don't know how to respond to such a thing. I demand a thorough investigation and answers from the Ministry of Education."

8. J'LEM MARATHON: DOZENS OF EXTREMISTS DETAINED
by Reut Hadar

Over 30,000 runners participated today, Friday, in the seventh Jerusalem Marathon, marking 50 years since the unification of Jerusalem. The Marathon is largest international marathon held in Israel, and this year broke a record, with 3,500 runners from 60 different countries around the world participating.

Jerusalem hotels are packed, with 10,000 room reservations, and 40 news agencies arrived from around the world just to cover the event.

The international Jerusalem marathon was chosen as one of the best spring races in the world by the leading British runner's magazine, and this year contains 6 events: the full marathon, the half marathon, the 10K, the 5K, a 1.7 kilometer family run, and a social 800 meter run.

Israeli Police bolstered forces around the area of the marathon, following threats from the extremist haredi organization 'The Yerushalmi Faction' to disrupt the marathon in protest of the detention of a yeshiva student who was arrested this week for draft dodging.

Two buses carrying haredi extremists were arrested at the Shoresh Junction near Jerusalem. The passengers will be brought in for investigation. Likewise, Police detained 20 extremists on various streets near the course of the marathon who are suspected of having intended to confound proper functioning of the marathon.

Police emphasized that they will "act within their authority according to the law and will use all means at their disposal against anyone who acts against the law and chooses to confound proper functioning of the marathon and breach public order."
