1. FALLEN SOLDIERS HELD BY HAMAS RECOGNIZED AS CAPTIVES MIA
by David Rosenberg
Hadar Goldin and Oron Shaul, the two fallen soldiers whose bodies remain in the hands of Hamas, have been recognized by the IDF as captives missing in action.
The move comes as part of a renewed effort to recover the bodies of the fallen soldiers, which have been held by Hamas since the 2014 Gaza conflict.
Shaul was killed in July 2014 when the armored personnel carrier he was riding in struck a mine. Hamas terrorists later captured his body, which they have held for ransom, demanding Israel free terrorists in exchange for the transfer of the body.
In August 2014, in the midst of a US-negotiated ceasefire, Hamas terrorists emerged from a terror-tunnel and struck an IDF position, killing three soldiers. The body of Goldin, who was among the soldiers killed in the attack, was never recovered by the IDF.
The bereaved families have pressed the Israeli government to bring back the bodies of the fallen soldiers, though Hamas has indicated it would demand a steep price for their return.
As part an effort to raise awareness and to regain momentum for their efforts, the Goldin and Shaul families requested that the army reclassify the soldiers from simply fallen to "captured and MIA".

The Orthodox Jewish community of Monsey, a town in Rockland County north of New York City, is in an uproar following publication of alleged statements by a public official calling for the diversion of state funding away from the community, with the expressed purpose of reining in population growth among local Jews.
At the center of the controversy is Rockland County Executive Edwin Day, a retired Bronx detective, who according to the testimony of Human Rights Commissioner Sreeramulu Nagubandi, had pressed to have public funds denied to the city of Ramapo in a bid to curtail the growth of the city's Orthodox Jewish community.
The city of Ramapo includes heavily-Jewish hamlets like Monsey and Spring Valley.
Nagubandi, who sued Day over an attempt to dismiss him from the position of Human Rights Commissioner, testified to the court that "the County Executive [Day] and some members of his administration have a goal to limit the growth of the Religious Jewish Community in Rockland County."
"Specifically," Nagubandi told the court, "I have personally heard from the County Executive regarding providing any funding to the Town of Ramapo in my capacity as the Director that I should be careful not to give too much money as that would only allow for the Jewish Religious Community to 'continue growing'."
"In fact, I am aware that the Deputy County Executive who represents the County Executive has personally told me about the Religious Jewish Community, 'We can't stop them, but we can and must try to slow their growth down'."
Aron Wieder, a county legislator, blasted Day for the alleged comments.
"My children…what in the world have they done wrong to merit the wrath and hatred of Mr. Ed Day."
"Mr. Day, my family has not wronged you in any way. Why, oh why, would you want to limit their growth?"
3. HAARETZ JOURNALIST LAUNCHES ANGRY TIRADE AGAINST 'SETTLER' JUDGE

Haaretz writer Uri Misgav launched a hyperbolic tirade in the paper's Friday edition, blasting Supreme Court Justice Noam Sohlberg for a ruling issued earlier this week barring alternative kashrut certifications from operating without license by the Israeli Rabbanut.
But Misgav's op-ed piece went far beyond criticism of the specific ruling in question. Entitled "The Israeli Justice Who Violates International Law Everytime He Comes Home", the piece centers around ad hominem attacks, which hit the justice primarily for his religious background and residence in Judea.
Excoriating Justice Elyakim Rubinstein as well for the ruling, Misgav blasted the authority to issue kashrut licenses to restaurants as "messianic", and lambasted the two judges for their religious background, suggesting they be restricted from ruling on matters pertaining to religion.
"The two who kept the messianic power in the rabbinate's hands were Elyakim Rubinstein and Noam Sohlberg, both of them observant Orthodox Jews who grew up in the religious Zionist movement," wrote Misgav. "The court let the cats guard the cream, a highly odd choice of justices."
"There's a clear conflict of interest in this case that involves tensions between religion and state. The secular justice on the panel, by the way, was the one who dissented."
Beyond the justice's religious background, Misgav attacked Sohlberg as an "offender", arguing that Israeli Jews – any Israeli Jews – who live beyond the Green Line are "taking an active part in a national transgression" and there for become partners "to the offense".
"The problem with Sohlberg… is that he's a resident of a West Bank settlement. He lives in Alon Shvut, a settlement in the heart of Gush Etzion".
"By definition, he's an offender."
In the wake of Misgav's op-ed piece, Justice Minister Ayelet Shaked condemned what she described as "the wild incitement of 'Haaretz' against Supreme Court Justices."
"The Haaretz newspaper reveals itself not as a leftist paper for people who feel they're important… [but as] a mouthpiece for incitement."

Actor and comedian Joe Piscopo earned nationwide fame with his celebrity impersonations, Saturday Night Live skits, and roles in Hollywood films like the remake of King Kong and Wise Guys.
Less well-known, however, is Piscopo's ardent support for the State of Israel.
Now hosting his own daily radio show, Piscopo airs his views on a social and political issues – including what he sees as the trend within the Democratic Party towards abandoning Israel.
Earlier this week, Piscopo sat down with Arutz Sheva to discuss the roots of his own pro-Israel views, his frustrations with the Democratic Party, and who he supports in the upcoming presidential election.
"I'm a lifelong Democrat," says Piscopo, "[but] I left the Democratic Party because I'm a little disillusioned politically with what's happening, including the lack of support for Israel."
"I'm not feeling the support from Washington [for Israel]," Piscopo later added. "Am I missing something here?"
Despite his ties with the Democratic Party, Piscopo says he plans to register as a Republican for the first time ever.
"I gotta vote for the Donald. I want to vote for Bernie as an anti-Hillary vote, but I'll register as a Republican."
5. FATHER OF SHOOTING VICTIM DEMANDS GOV'T GIVE 'CONCESSIONS' TO PA
by JTA
JTA - The father of one of the victims of Wednesday's terror attack at a Tel Aviv shopping center criticized the Israeli government for not doing enough to resolve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
At the funeral Thursday for Ido Ben Ari, one of four people killed when two Palestinian terrorists opened fire at the Sarona Market in central Tel Aviv the previous evening, the grieving father of the 42-year-old Coca-Cola executive and former IDF elite commando unit fighter criticized the government's response to terror.
"The leaders we elect at democratic elections are supposed to find a strategic solution, which demands far-reaching vision, concessions, a creative solution, and not mantras and laundered words," the father, whose name was not published, said at the funeral in Yavne, which was attended by hundreds. "Last night, after the attack, the Prime Minister and two of his ministers arrived and yet another security cabinet issued decrees — not to return corpses, to put up barriers, to destroy houses and to make lives harder. These solutions create suffering, hatred, despair and [lead] to more people joining the circle of terror.
"What's needed is a solution rather than saying all the time that there's nobody to make peace with," the father continued. "We chose you to stop the cycle of blood. Already 49 years you've been trying to solve things tactically and you haven't succeeded. The time has come for a strategic solution."
Ben Ari, who lived in the Tel Aviv satellite city of Ramat Gan, was dining with his wife and two children at the Benedict Restaurant in Sarona Market at the time of the attack. His wife was also injured.
Two other victims, Mila Mishayev, 32, of Ashkelon, and Michael Feige, 58, also of Ramat Gan, will be buried Friday afternoon. The date for the funeral of the fourth victim — Ilana Naveh, 39, of Tel Aviv — took place on Thursday.
6. SYNAGOGUE, RABBI'S HOME VANDALIZED IN FRANCE
by David Rosenberg
A synagogue in the town of Verdun near France's eastern border was vandalized over the weekend, the European Jewish Press reports.
Worshippers discovered swastikas and white supremacist slogans scrawled on the house of prayer, including the phrase "white power". Similar graffiti was also found on the house of a local rabbi.
This is the second such incident in as many months.
Francis Kalifat, the President of the Representative Council of French Jewish Institutions (Crif), condemned the vandalism on Twitter.
"The vandalism of a place of worship is unacceptable. I strongly condemn the anti-Semitic tags on the Verdun synagogue."
Unlike much of the anti-Semitism plaguing Parisian Jews, this incident appears to be the work of the far-right, rather than Islamic radicals.
The leader of the Jewish community in Verdun, Jean-Claude Levy, says the repeated acts of vandalism call for greater security at Jewish institutions.
"It's the police who informed me," recalled Levy. "I went there and saw swastikas on the wall of the synagogue as well as the inscription 'white power'."
"The only solution we have is to secure the place. We will do everything to protect it. I'll contact the Jewish Central Consistory of France."
7. STATE DEPARTMENT: ISRAEL SHOULDN'T PUNISH INNOCENT PALESTINIANS
by Ben Ariel
Despite condemning Wednesday terrorist shooting attack in the Sarona Market in Tel Aviv, the State Department on Thursday said that Israel's response to the attack should be designed in a way that does not punish innocent Palestinians.
"We understand the Israeli government's desire to protect its citizens ... and we strongly support that right, but we would hope that any measures it takes are designed to also take into consideration the impact on Palestinian citizens that are trying to go about their daily lives," State Department spokesman Mark Toner told a news briefing, according to the Reuters news agency.
The comments were a response to Israel's actions following the attack, which included freezing work entry visas for some 204 members of the attackers' extended family.
Israel also rescinded some 83,000 entry permits given to Arabs from Judea and Samaria for Ramadan. Goodwill gestures to Gaza Arabs, including travel permits to Jerusalem to participate in Ramadan prayers on the Temple Mount, were also rescinded.
On Wednesday night, hours after the attack, Toner issued a statement condemning it and referring to it as "cowardly".
"The United States condemns today's horrific terrorist attack in Tel Aviv in the strongest possible terms. We extend our deepest condolences to the families of those killed and our hopes for a quick recovery for those wounded," said Toner.
"These cowardly attacks against innocent civilians can never be justified. We are in touch with Israeli authorities to express our support and concern," he added.
