Hundreds of people gathered at the Netzer Hazani synagogue Monday afternoon for the funeral of 20-year-old IDF Sergeant Shlomo Rindenow, a lone soldier from the US who died in a hand grenade explosion Sunday.

Rindenow was killed along with First Sergeant Hussam Tapesh, who was buried earlier Sunday in his hometown of Beit Jan in northern Israel.

The incident, which occurred as the soldiers were patrolling the northern border with Syria, is still under investigation.

Earlier Monday, Rindenow's family called on the Israeli public to attend his funeral, having vowed he would be buried in the country he served.

"For most of the course of his (army) service my brother was alone," his brother Jeff said. "He volunteered to the army because he wanted to be a warrior. We are requesting that at least for his final departure he won't be alone."

Many responded to the call, flocking from around the country to escort the fallen soldier to his final resting place at the nearby Netzer Hazani-Yesodot cemetery.

2. STABBING ATTACK NEAR HEVRON; TWO WOUNDED
by Ari Soffer

Two people have been injured in a stabbing attack at El-Aroub Junction in the Gush Etzion region near Hevron.

The victims are both Israeli men in their twenties, and were lightly wounded in the attack.

Magen David Adom paramedics are on the scene, as are security forces.

The terrorist was shot and seriously injured by IDF soldiers responding to the incident, which marks the latest attack in the wave of Arab terrorism sweaping Israel.

Despite ebbing significantly over the past several months, recent weeks have seen several knife, gun and car ramming attacks.

Just yesterday, an attempt by an Arab terrorist to bomb the Jerusalem Light Rail was foiled by alert security guards.

Last Thursday, an Arab terrorist was shot as he attempted to stab Border Police officers carrying out an arrest operation.

Days earlier, a Jewish motorist was shot and wounded by terrorists near Tekoa in Gush Etzion.

3. EXTRADITION OF ELIEZER BERLAND BEGINS, AS OWN SON SHUNS HIM
by David Rosenberg

The four year international odyssey of Rabbi Eliezer Berland is about to come to an end.

The fugitive rabbi and spiritual leader of the Shuvu Banim yeshiva in Jerusalem fled Israel four years ago, following allegations of sexual misconduct with female members of the religious movement he founded within the Breslov stream of Hasidism.

Since then, Israeli authorities have sought his extradition, tracking him across the United States, Italy, Morocco, and Switzerland.

Finally, in 2015, Berland was arrested in South Africa, though he was not transferred for extradition until this week.

Now, however, the elusive rabbi has been handed over to the International Criminal Police Organization (Interpol), finally paving the way for his extradition to Israel, where he will stand trial for a variety of sex crimes.

While officials at the Shuvu Banim yeshiva maintain Berland's innocence, Berland's son, Nahman, and leading Breslov rabbis have condemned him and warned the public to steer clear of the fugitive rabbi and his teachings.

On Monday, BeHadrei Haredim publicized a recording of Nahman Berland lambasting his father as a "criminal".

"[H]e pretends to be a great saint," the younger Berland said. "My father has no shame….when people know about his crimes they won't come near him; my father is such a criminal – either he's totally wicked or he's mentally ill, and I don't care which."

Nahman Berland also railed against some of his father's followers who he claimed dismissed his crimes.

"So they say my father is god, so everything is permitted to him," said Nahman, calling such ideas "Christianity". "You're Christians, you are."

A number of prominent Breslov rabbis, including Yaakov Meir Schechter, Shmuel Moshe Kramer, and Natan Libermentch, released a joint statement condemning Eliezer Berland and warning the public to "keep their distance".

"We hereby announce our view that we have no part or share or ties with this man or any of his followers, and anyone who cares for his own wellbeing will keep his distance from him."

4. TRUMP DEPLOYS FAMILY FOR CONTENTIOUS 2016 GOP CONVENTION
by David Rosenberg

With the 2016 Republican National Convention just hours away, the party's standard-bearer is preparing to deploy his secret weapon – his family.

Presumptive Republican nominee Donald Trump has made significant headway against his likely Democratic opponent for this November's general election, tying or beating former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in polling of key battleground states and narrowing the gap in nationwide polls.

Nevertheless, Trump still trails the former First Lady by an average of 3.2% according to the RealClearPolitics average of polling. Nate Silver of FiveThirtyEight, whose revolutionary polling analysis correctly predicted the results in 49 states in the 2008 US presidential election and in all 50 states in 2012, currently gives Mr. Trump a 36.7% chance of winning this year's election.

While those are the best odds yet for Trump this season, he enters his party's national convention this year a decided underdog for the general election.

Despite his bump in the polls following FBI chief James Comey's criticisms of Clinton's mishandling of classified government material on her private internet server, a series of deadly terror attacks, and racially-motivated assassinations of police officers in Texas and Louisiana, Trump's unfavorables remain high – and in most polls, exceed Clinton's.

According to a recent CNN/ORC poll, 42% of registered voters had a favorable opinion of Mrs. Clinton, compared to 39% who viewed Trump favorably, compared to 55% who viewed Clinton unfavorably and 59% who felt similarly about the GOP nominee.

In the past, Trump has utilized his family in the past to soften his image, bringing wife Melania and children Eric, Ivanka, and Donald Trump Jr. out into the spotlight to highlight his background as a family man.

The recently published schedule for the convention, which is slated to being at 1:00 p.m. EST (8:00 p.m. Jerusalem Time), gives pride of place to members of the Trump family, with his wife or children headlining each and every day of the convention.

On Monday, Trump's wife, Melania, headlines, along with Senator Joni Ernst from Iowa and retired Lieutenant General Michael Flynn – who were long considered a possible VP picks – among others.

On Tuesday, Donald Trump Junior will headline alongside former presidential hopeful Ben Carson and Senator Shelley Moore Capito of West Virginia.

Eric Trump is slated to speak on Wednesday, as is Trump's running mate, Indiana Governor Mike Pence, and former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Newt Gingrich.

Ivanka, one of Trump's closest advisors, is set to headline on Thursday, the last day of the convention, ahead of her father, as he formally accepts the party's nomination.

5. PUBLIC URGED TO ATTEND FUNERAL OF LONE SOLDIER KILLED BY GRENADE
by Ari Soffer

The family of a lone soldier from New Jersey who was killed in northern Israel Sunday has called on members of the public to join his funeral later today (Monday).

Sergeant Shlomo Rindenow, 20, was killed together with his comrade First Sergeant Hussam Tapesh, 24, when a hand grenade detonated during a patrol along the Syrian border for reasons which at this point remain unclear.

His funeral is set for 3 p.m. Monday, and will set out from the synagogue in Netzer Hazani, just south of Rehovot. He will be laid to rest at the nearby Netzer Hazani-Yesodot cemetery. The funeral will be broadcast live on Arutz Sheva.

Tapesh, an army reservist from the Druze village of Beit Jan who was driving the patrol jeep, was buried this morning in his hometown.

In an interview with Arutz Sheva Sunday, Shlomo's brother Jeff described him as a uniquely dedicated and motivated soldier.

Speaking Monday to Israel's Channel Two, Jeff called on the Israeli public to grant him the burial he deserved.

"For most of the course of his (army) service my brother was alone," he said. "He volunteered to the army because he wanted to be a warrior. We are requesting that at least for his final departure he won't be alone."

6. SHABBAT: A DAY OFF FOR EVERYONE?
by Rachel Kaplan

Despite the government's opposition, the Labour and Welfare Committee unanimously passed, for its first reading in the Knesset, a law which would allow all workers, not just religious ones, to refuse to work on his religious day of rest. A bill must pass three readings to be issued into law.

"With all due respect to the warnings we received, the Knesset does not have to jump in line with the government's position, or that of the Cabinet," exhorted Committee Chairman Eli Alaluf (Kulanu). "This proposed bill is important socially, and will be pushed through. In the following readings, we can delve into the proposal, and continue to discuss its details."

A sponsor of the bill, MK Aliza Lavie (Yesh Atid), celebrated: "This proposed bill ends discrimination between religious people and non-religious people. Today, only the religious are allowed not to work on their day of rest. Shabbat belongs to all Jews, not just to the religious. Every Jew needs to be allowed to stop for a moment, to rest, and to take a break from the rat race."

However, some requested that a clause, which incudes workers with permits to work on Shabbat, be struck from the bill.

"Such a permit can only be granted after careful examination," comments Attorney Segal Sudai of the Chamber of Commerce Association, considering the effect of every Israeli worker taking off on Shabbat. "The economy needs it."

7. TURKEY PREPARED 'PURGE' LISTS PRIOR TO COUP, SAYS EU LEADER
by David Rosenberg

Turkey has arrested more than 6,000 during purges of the army and judiciary following the failed coup attempt over the weekend. More than 290 people were killed and some 1,400 wounded in the abortive uprising Friday night and Saturday.

While Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan blamed an exiled Muslim cleric for inspiring the attempted overthrow of Turkey's government, conspiracy theories have abounded that Erdogan himself may be behind the attempted takeover, using it as a pretext to purge the military and courts of possible enemies.

On Monday, European Union commissioner Johannes Hahn said the rapid mass arrests immediately following the coup attempt suggested the purges were pre-planned.

"It looks at least as if something has been prepared. The lists are available, which indicates it was prepared and to be used at a certain stage. I'm very concerned. It is exactly what we feared."

Hahn's comments have fueled speculation the coup attempt was orchestrated by the Turkish president himself.

On Monday it was also revealed that rebel pilots had targeted Erdogan's plane as the president returned to Istanbul, yet did not open fire. A senior Turkish official claimed rebel forces targeted Erdogan with airstrikes, missing him "by minutes".
