1. US: Terror attack in Har Adar 'unprovoked', 'evil'

by David Rosenberg

US Ambassador to Israel David Friedman condemned the terror attack in Har Adar which left three Israelis dead and one wounded Tuesday, calling the shooting a “cruel” and “evil brutality” and an act of “unprovoked terrorism”.

“Once again, Israelis confront the cruel and evil brutality of unprovoked terrorism,” Friedman wrote on his Twitter account. “We pray for the victims at Har Adar and their families.”

The attack, carried out by 37-year-old Beit Surik resident Mahmoud Ahmed Gamal, took place at the back entrance of the town of Har Adar, northwest of Jerusalem.

Gamal, who carried a work permit allowing him to enter Israeli towns in the Seam Line area along the Green Line separating pre-1967 Israel from Judea and Samaria, approached the back gate to Har Adar Tuesday morning carrying a concealed pistol. When security officers ordered him to halt for inspection, he drew the weapon and opened fire, killing three and wounding a fourth.

The victims include 20-year-old Border Police officer Sgt. Solomon Gaviria from Beer Yaakov, 25-year-old security guard Yusuf Ottman from the Israeli-Arab town of Abu Ghosh, and 25-year-old security guard Or Arish, from Har Adar.

A fourth victim was evacuated in serious condition to Ein Karem Hospital in Jerusalem.

At least three Israelis were killed and a fourth wounded in a terror attack in the town of Har Adar northwest of Jerusalem Tuesday morning.

According to initial reports, at 7:14 a.m. a terrorist opened fire on a group of Border Police officers and guards near the back gate of Har Adar, used by Palestinian Arabs who work in the town.

Police say the terrorist aroused the suspicions of security forces stationed at the gate. When he was ordered to halt, the terrorist drew a pistol concealed under his shirt and opened fire on security forces stationed at the entrance.

Emergency medical teams from MDA have been dispatched to the scene and are currently treating the wounded. MDA officials reported that three of the injured were in critical condition and the fourth in serious condition.

Hadassah Ein Karem Hospital in Jerusalem reported that one shooting victim was evacuated to the hospital’s trauma center in serious condition.

Army Radio later reported that three of the wounded had succumbed to their injuries.

The terrorist was shot and killed by security forces.

Moshir Abu Katish, a United Hatzalah volunteer emergency first responder from the Israeli-Arab town of Abu Ghosh, described the scene of the attack.

"I was alerted to the attack by the United Hatzalah dispatch center and I raced over to the scene [of the attack], which took place near the fence of Har Adar. Security forces had shot and killed the terrorist who had carried out a shooting attack against a group of Israelis who live in Har Adar.”

“I ran to treat the injured people who were suffering from gunshot wounds to their upper bodies. More volunteers from United Hatzalah began to arrive and assist in the treatment. EMTs, paramedics, and aoctors all arrived at the scene as did our Psychotrauma and Crisis Response unit who is tasked with providing emotional and psychological stabilization at scenes of major trauma such as this one. Unfortunately, the three more seriously injured people in the attack were pronounced dead at the scene. A fourth person who was injured we treated at the scene before he was transported to the hospital for further treatment and observation."

3. Foreign media refuses to classify Har Adar attack as terrorism

by Nitsan Keidar

International media is calling this morning’s terror attack in Har Adar a “shooting,” refusing to address the terroristic nature of the attack.

Thus, CNN’s headline about the attack read: “Three Israelis killed in shooting at West Bank crossing,” without reference to the word “terror.” The terrorist himself is referred to as “the attacker” and “gunman.”

BBC reported: “Palestinian gunman kills three Israelis,” and was sure to note that the attack took place at the entrance to a “settlement in the occupied West Bank.” The article notes that the “gunman [...] was also shot and died later” after “[shooting] his victims at close range,” but does not explain that he was shot for committing a terror attack. Later, the article goes on to give “context” for the attack.

“The issue of settlements is one of the most contentious between Israel and the Palestinians, who see them as an obstacle to peace.”

According to NBC, the terrorist is a “suspect.” The article’s headline reads: “Three Israelis shot dead by Palestinian at West Bank settlement.”

The lengthy article makes no mention of “terror,” except while quoting Israeli officials Tzipi Hotovely and Avigdor Liberman, and instead suggests that the attack is part of a legitimate struggle. “Jewish settlements in the West Bank are a contentious issue because Palestinians see the area, which Israel has occupied since 1967, as integral to a future state.”

In an exception to the general trend of shying away from labelling the attack as “terror,” Fox News’ headline read: “Jerusalem terror attack: 3 Israelis killed in shooting.”

4. Supreme Court to boycott Judea and Samaria jubilee

by Tzvi Lev

Israel's Supreme Court has decided to boycott the official state event marking 50 years of settlement in Judea, Samaria, the Jordan Valley, and the Golan on Wednesday in Kfar Etzion.

Supreme Court President Miriam Naor ordered Justice Neal Hendel to cancel his scheduled attendance at the celebration after deciding that the event was political in nature, Channel 10 reported. The decision was conveyed in a letter to MK Isawwi Frej (Meretz), who had asked the court to qualify whether they would attend.

"A few weeks ago, Supreme Court President Justice Miriam Naor was requested to participate in the event, or to send a representative on her behalf," read the missive. "Justice Neal Hendel was asked by President Naor to represent the judiciary at the event."

"We received a detailed invitation a few days ago, and after closer examination, it was decided that there was no basis to represent the judicial branch at the event" the letter concluded.

Deputy Foreign Minister MK Tzipi Hotovely blasted the decision. "The Supreme Court President's decision to boycott the state event in Kfar Etzion is an outrage that scorns our national history" she tweeted. MK Bezalel Smotrich (Jewish Home) concurred, saying that "this is an official ceremony and the Supreme Court is disrespectful for not participating".

The Supreme Court is not the only ones refusing to attend the ceremony. The Zionist Union, the largest party in the opposition, decided to boycott the jubilee as well due to their "moral opposition." MK Eitan Cabel (Zionist Union) published a Facebook post in which he wrote that "no member of the Knesset from the Zionist Union should participate in the 'state ceremony marking the anniversary of the liberation of Judea and Samaria, the Jordan Valley, and the Golan Heights".

"The Prime Minister and the extreme right are leading us into the vast abyss of one state for two peoples, which will destroy the Jewish state," Cabel added.

Yesh Atid faction leader Yair Lapid also declined to attend and will send MK Chaim Yellin instead.

The European Union’s Ambassador to Israel, Emanuele Giaufret will also not attend the event, citing "longstanding EU policy".

5. Report: Terrorist had history of domestic abuse

by David Rosenberg

Investigators probing Tuesday morning’s deadly terror attack in Har Adar say the terrorist responsible for the shooting had a troubled family life and a history of domestic violence.

The terrorist, 37-year-old Beit Surik resident Mahmoud Ahmed Gamal, had “significant personal and family problems,” Shin Bet internal security agency officials said, “including problems involving domestic violence.”

According to a report by Kan, Gamal’s wife left him several weeks ago, moving to Jordan and leaving Gamal to care for the couple’s four children.

Before Gamal went on a murderous rampage at the entrance to Har Adar Tuesday, he penned a letter for his wife in which he called himself “a terrible husband” and alluded to his plans to carry out a terror attack on Israelis.

“When you wake up this morning, see this and let it calm your conscience. You’ve been a wonderful wife and a kind mother; I was a terrible husband. I say this with a clear mind: my wife has no connection with what is going to happen tomorrow.”

6. 'Terrorist's home will be demolished'

by Tzvi Lev

Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu addressed Tuesday's murderous terrorist attack in Har Adar that left a Border Policeman and two security guards dead.

"On behalf of the government and the entire nation, I send condolences to the families of those killed and wish a speedy recovery to the security coordinator who was wounded," Netanyahu said at a government meeting.

Netanyahu said that the home of the murderer will be demolished, in line with Israel's policy to destroy the homes of terrorists. "The IDF has already surrounded the village and we will nullify the work permits held by all of the terrorist's relatives," Netanyahu told ministers.

Netanyahu emphasized that the murderous attack was the result of systematic incitement by the Palestinian Authority (PA), saying that "I expect that [PA Chairman] Mahmoud Abbas will condemn the attack and not try to justify it. Our security forces will continue to act against incitement and terrorism."

The issue of Israel's policy granting work permits to Palestinian Arab laborers enabling them to enter pre-1967 is being scrutinized after the terrorist who killed three in Har Adar possessed such a permit, allowing him to enter the Israeli community where he was employed.

Multiple politicians vowed immediately after the attack to severely restrict the work permits, such as Coalition Chairman MK David Bitan (Likud), who said that "we need to reevaluate the policy of entry permits into Israel. The Palestinians are exploiting our goodwill to kill us."

Just two weeks prior to the attack, Justice Minister Ayelet Shaked pushed Israeli business owners to hire more Palestinian Authority residents, stating that no terror attacks had been committed by PA Arabs carrying Israeli work permits.

“I strongly support increasing the number of work permits for Palestinians,” said Shaked adding that she was pushing Israeli restaurateurs hiring illegal immigrants to replace them with PA residents with Israeli work permits.

“I spoke with some restaurant owners who had come to me asking what they could do if all their [illegal immigrant] workers from Eritrea and Sudan would be deported. I told them ‘hire Palestinians – they’re people who want jobs and don’t carry out terror attacks.”

Netanyahu noted at an earlier meeting with Likud ministers on Tuesday that security forces were debating the issue. "We have to examine whether the attack on Har Adar is an unusual event that symbolizes a new pattern. If it does, we must prepare accordingly" he said.

7. John McCain: Very poor prognosis on brain cancer

by Gary Willig

US Senator John McCain (R-Ariz) said that he has been given a “very poor prognosis” by his doctors in his fight against brain cancer.

The 80-year old senator was diagnosed in July with primary glioblastoma, one of the most aggressive forms of brain cancer. He underwent surgery to remove the tumor.

The late Senator Edward M. Kennedy passed away from the same disease in 2009.

McCain told CBS' 60 Minutes in an interview which was aired Sunday that he often thinks about Senator Kennedy. He said he was inspired by how Kennedy “never gave up because he loved the engagement.”

McCain said that he sometimes experiences "fear of what happens,” but that he also has gratitude for having “had a great life.”

“It’s not that you’re leaving, it’s that you stayed,” he said.
