1. JEWS IN NICE ARE SCARED, BUT STAND TOGETHER
by Yoni Kempinski
On Thursday, a week after the terror attack in southern France, representatives from the three major Abrahamic religious held a memorial ceremony and prayer.
Arutz Sheva spoke with a senior member of the Jewish community in Nice in order to hear how the past few days have been for the community. N. is one of the people responsible for the Jewish community's security in the city and asked not to be identified by name during these sensitive times.
"The attack left the Jewish community in shock," he explained. "It occurred close to Shabbat and many people didn't come to the synagogues the next morning. People are afraid. It happened near the community, near the synagogue."
Did you increase security at Jewish institutions?
"Certainly. Last Shabbat, this Shabbat, and for the near future there will be increased security. The message is to continue living as Jews in France - to give a good and secure feeling, and of course to protect the institutions."
As for the victims of the attack, the community has one dead woman plus her sister, who is still in serious condition and unconscious. "There are another ten or so who were wounded and their lives are not in danger. One of them was already released home and we hope that the others will be discharged soon."
Immediately after the attack, the community mobilized to treat its members. N. told about the treatment and consultation that the community organized for anyone who felt overwhelmed by the attack. "Dozens came to participate and tell what they went through. Many of the community members saw what happened up close. They saw the victims, everything. They are in shock, especially the children who naturally keep such things inside. We push the children to take part and talk, and it helps."
Is there a feeling of common destiny in the community because of the attack?
"People are very united," N. answered decisively, and told how, immediately after the attack, many called community institutions to see how they could volunteer and help those in need.
In conclusion, he asked to emphasize that "As a community, we are always very united and tied to each other, and this is especially so now after the tragedy. But we're also very connected to the city's residents. All of Nice is united."
2. BEITAR ILLIT: TODDLER DIES AFTER LOCKED IN CAR FOR TWO HOURS
by Uzi Baruch
An unconscious 16-month-old child was found after spending two hours in a closed car in Beitar Illit on Friday.
MDA first responders evacuated her to Jerusalem's Sha'arei Tzedek Hospital, where doctors were forced to declare her dead.
Ezra Gottleib, a volunteer with both United Hatzalah and MDA, said: "There was an unconscious child about a year and a half old who was brought by her family to the MDA station at the entrance to Beitar Illit. With the help of a mobile intensive care unit and other volunteers from United Hatzalah, we used advanced resuscitation and then she was evacuated to Jerusalem's Sha'arei Tzedek Hospital in critical condition."
A spokesperson for Beitar Illit stated that the girl was found by her father, who hurried to bring her to MDA. He added that the resuscitation was carried out inside of the station.
An increasing number of babies have recently died from excessive heat after being forgotten in vehicles. Ten days ago, a six-month-old child died after being forgotten in a car in Arad.
An investigation found that the child had been forgotten in her grandmother's car after the grandmother dropped off the child's mother at work.
She was already dead when the grandmother returned to the vehicle to pick up the mother at the end of the day.
3. MICHAEL SCHLISSEL RELEASED TO HOUSE ARREST
by Eliran Aharon
A Jerusalem court has released Michael Schlissel to house arrest for two days.
Schlissel, whose brother Yishai murdered Shira Banki during last year's Pride Parade, is suspected of conspiring to attack attendees at yesterday's (Thursday) parade.
"The police now understand that Michael is innocent. Unfortunately it took three days of imprisonment for them to understand this," said Schlissel's lawyer, Itamar Ben-Gvir.
Schlissel claims that police misheard an Aramaic expression during a conversation between the two brothers. During a phone conversation, Yishai said they are "bar plugta" (opponents), which the police heard as "pluga ehat" (one company). Based on this misunderstanding, the police believed Michael intended to attack yesterday's parade.
"The investigators didn't understand that Michael disagrees with his brother. To me, this proves the need to enlist haredi investigators," said Ben-Gvir. "The Schlissel family was wronged and the police must apologize to them."
4. 'SOMETIMES THE FEELINGS FLOAT UP AND YOU LASH OUT'
by Arutz Sheva Staff
Pinhas Shandorfi, from the Binyamin community of Nahliel, was arrested for carrying out a number of attacks against Palestinians over the past few years.
They include setting a car on fire, attacking a Palestinian man and throwing rocks. Some of his friends are also accused of throwing a gas grenade into a Palestinian home in the village of Beitillu.
"You grow up in place where your brother was killed yesterday and your neighbor will be murdered tomorrow. It's difficult to live in this setting. Sometimes you're able to stay strong and sometimes if floats up and you lash out. You say, 'Maybe this will stop this feeling of abandonment,'" Shandorfi told Channel 10.
About four months ago, Shandorfi was arrested, along with several of his relatives and friends. Like others before him, he intended to remain silent in the Shin Beit interrogation rooms, but he ultimately opened his mouth and admitted to everything.
The confession was partially out of fear of torture, a fear that resulted from claims by other right-wing detainees. "They try to make you understand that you will remain here forever unless you confess now," one said.
Shandorfi did more than admit to his crimes, though. He also helped the investigators by convincing another suspect to open up. "They told me to tell him to say the truth and that it would be better for him. This is a difficult situation but there's no other way," he recounted.
Today, Shandorfi is 22 years old, married and soon will be a father. He described the transformation from a hilltop youth who went out in the night to burn a Palestinian vehicle to helping the security services stop such criminals. "I don't see these things the way I used to look at them. I'm sorry that it doesn't really help."
5. ARAB-CANADIAN NEWSPAPER BLAMES THE JEWS
by Dalit Halevi
B'nai Brith Canada on Wednesday condemned an Arabic newspaper in Canada which denied the Holocaust in an article that included anti-Semitic arguments.
The article, entitled "The Question Which Everyone Ignores: Why Did Hitler Kill the Jews?", was published in the June-July 2016 edition of the Al-Saraha newspaper.
The article, which was copied from an Egyptian newspaper, rejects the claim that six million Jews were murdered in the Holocaust, claims that "Jewish propaganda" inflated the number, blames the Jews for the economic collapse of 1870 and 1920, and accuses it of distributing pornography that corrupted society.
B'nai Brith CEO Michael Mostyn said, "This article constitutes an obscene form of hate propaganda aimed at Canada's Jewish community."
He expressed concern over the fact that the article was published in a community newspaper which also includes advertisements for local political parties, as well as Ramadan greetings by Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne and other members of Ontario's Liberal government.
6. BACKLASH HITS RABBI LEVINSTEIN'S SUPPORTERS
by Benny Tucker
Mickey Gitzin has called on Tel Aviv Mayor Ron Huldai and Religious Council head Eldad Mizrahi to fire the rabbis who supported Rabbi Yigal Levinstein.
Gitzin is the director of Be Free Israel and a member of the Tel Aviv Municipality on behalf of Meretz.
In his letter, he explained: "In the past few days we have witnessed a public uproar over the Rabbi Levinstein's incitement. Yesterday, a group of 300 inciting rabbis from across Israel effectively encouraged attacks and violence against the LGBT community."
Gitzin demanded that Huldai and Mizrahi to prosecute the rabbis. "Three hundred rabbis signed the letter, including three Tel Aviv rabbis: Rabbi Yuval Alpert from Jaffa; Rabbi Daniel Miller, the head of the Aviva Hatorah Yeshiva; and Rabbi Shimon Asher, a neighborhood rabbi in Tel Aviv.
"Rabbis Alpert and Miller are with independent institutes, but Rabbi Asher is a public official who receives his salary from public funds. He should be summoned for a hearing prior to being fired due to his participation in incitement.
"I believe that the Tel Aviv-Jaffa Municipality should also refrain from cooperating with the rabbis who incite others, like Alpert and Miller."
Rabbi Levinstein heads the Eli pre-military academy. He is an outspoken opponent of homosexuality.
7. NA'AMA BUCHRIS: 'I BELIEVE IN MY HUSBAND AND HIS INTEGRITY'
by Ido Ben-Porat
Brigadier General Ofek Buchris's wife Na'ama has stood beside her husband since the uproar began, and is still supporting him now that prosecutors have filed charges.
General Buchris is charged with sex crimes, including rape, against his subordinate soldiers.
"I am surprised and shocked by the Military Advocate General's (MAG) cowardly decision," she told Yediyot Ahronot. "It had all the legal tools to end this story.
"This decision, along with the scandalous manner in which the interrogation was conducted, raises concern over things that I naively didn't believe could happen," Na'ama added. "The only faith we have held on to over these passing months is in Ofek and his integrity. Nothing is stronger than what we have at home."
On Thursday, the MAG announced that it had is charging General Buchris with rape and sodomy. The MAG noted that it made its decision with a heavy heart, in light of the fact that Buchris is a well-regarded officer and soldier.
"As part of the thorough investigation, evidence came to light that suggested the officer carried out a number of serious sexual crimes against a low-ranked soldier in her compulsory service and towards a female officer, while the two served under his command as the head of the Golani Brigade. Therefore, the MAG decided to file charged," said an IDF spokesperson.
Buchris held a press conference outside of his Galilee home last night, during which he claimed that nothing ascribed to him in the charges ever took place.
"I was shocked to learn of the MAG's decision to file charges. The entire issue will be made clear in the court. Everyone who reviewed in the investigation knows that there is no truth the charges. For now there is a piece of paper that says I did this or that, and it is a bill that must be settled."
He explained: "This is a battle for my life and I will win it. These things never happened. The indictment is a bill that must be paid. These charges have no truth behind them. I am certain that, when the issue is brought to the court in a public hearing, the truth will come to light. I thank my supporters, my friends and all those who encouraged us and helped us along the way."
8. TRUMP: CLINTON'S LEGACY DOESN'T HAVE TO BE AMERICA'S LEGACY
by Ben Ariel
[youtube:2017422]
Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump took the stage at the Republican National Convention on Thursday, warning against the election of Hillary Clinton as president.
"I humbly and gratefully accept your nomination for the presidency of the United States," he said, speaking days after he was confirmed as the Republican nominee.
"We are a team," he declared to applause, adding, "Together we will lead our party back to the White House, and we will lead our country back to safety, prosperity and peace."
"I have a message for all of you: the crime and violence that today afflicts our nation will soon – and I mean very soon – come to an end. Beginning on Jan. 20, 2017, safety will be restored," said Trump, who then warned that "America is far less safe – and the world is far less stable – than when Obama made the decision to put Hillary Clinton in charge of America's foreign policy. Let's defeat her in November."
He pointed out some of Obama's mistakes, as he views them, such as the deal with Iran and the attack on the consulate on Benghazi, Libya, which occurred while Clinton was Secretary of State.
"I am certain it is a decision that President Obama truly regrets. Her bad instincts and her bad judgment – something pointed out by Bernie Sanders – are what caused so many of the disasters unfolding today," claimed Trump.
"In 2009, pre-Hillary, ISIS wasn't on the map. Egypt was stable. Iran was being choked by sanctions. Syria was somewhat under control. After four years of Hillary Clinton, what do we have? ISIS has spread across the region and around the world. Libya is in ruins. Egypt was turned over to the radical Muslim Brotherhood, forcing the military to take control. Iran is on a path to nuclear war. Syria is engulfed in war," he said, pointing out some failures he attributed to Clinton.
"This is the legacy of Hillary Clinton - death, destruction, terrorism and weakness," declared Trump.
"But Hillary Clinton's legacy does not have to be America's legacy," he continued. "The problems we face now – poverty and violence at home, war and destruction abroad – will last only as long as we continue relying on the same politicians who created them."
"As long as we are led by politicians who will not put America First, then we can be assured that other nations will not treat America with respect. This will all change when I take office," promised Trump.
If elected, he said, "Middle-income Americans and businesses will experience profound relief, and taxes will be greatly simplified for everyone. America is one of the highest-taxed nations in the world. Reducing taxes will cause new companies and new jobs to come roaring back into our country."
"Then we are going to deal with the issue of regulation, one of the greatest job-killers of them all."
"With these new economic policies, trillions of dollars will start flowing into our country. This new wealth will improve the quality of life for all Americans. We will build the roads, highways, bridges, tunnels, airports and the railways of tomorrow."
"This, in turn, will create millions more jobs."
"We will rescue kids from failing schools by helping their parents send them to a safe school of their choice," said Trump, adding, "So to every parent who dreams for their child, and every child who dreams for their future, I say these words to you tonight: I'm with you, I will fight for you, and I will win for you."
Clinton, he warned, "will keep our rigged system in place." Her message, he said, "is that things will never change. My message is that things have to change and they have to change right now!"
"In this race to the White House, I am the candidate of law and order. This administration has failed America's inner cities."
Trump also vowed to defeat ISIS and defeat it fast.
"The damage and devastation that can be inflicted by Islamic radicals has been proven over and over. Only weeks ago, in Orlando, Florida, 49 wonderful Americans were savagely murdered by an Islamic terrorist. This time, the terrorist targeted the LGBTQ community. No good, and we're going stop it," he declared.
Fighting radical terrorism, he said, means "working with our greatest ally in the region – the State of Israel."
"We will make America great again. God bless you and good night!" he concluded.
