TIBI INCENSED: AN OUTRAGEOUS AND SHAMEFUL IDEA 1. RABBI BENNY ELON PASSES AWAY by Uzi Baruch Former head of the Beit Orot yeshiva Rabbi Benny Elon has passed away after a long struggle with cancer. The funeral will be held today at the Har Hamenuchot cemetery in Jerusalem at 3:30 pm. The Rabbi, a resident of Beit El, was born in Rehavia in Jerusalem. He studied in yeshiva high school in Pardes Hana in northern Israel, and later at the Negev Yeshiva and Merkaz Harav in Jerusalem and at the Idra Kolel in the Golan. He served in the IDF in artillery and was released with the rank of lieutenant. At 23 he was appointed as head of the religious kibbutz movement's branches in the Beit Shean Valley in northern Israel. Later, he served as a rabbi at a number of yeshivot, including the hesder yeshiva of Maale Adumim, Machon Meir, and Ateret Cohanim in the Old City of Jerusalem. In 1990, he and Hanan Porat established the Beit Orot Yeshiva on Mount Scopus. Later, he served in the political sphere as an MK and government minister. In 2004, then-PM Sharon fired Elon and Liberman due to their opposition to the "Disengagement." Since then, he had focused on developing the Israel's connections with other nations at the US congress and other parliaments around the world. He won the Moskowitz Prize for Zionism in 2016. Or while the president, like his predecessors, invoke a security clause to delay implementation of the 1995 Jerusalem Embassy law requiring the relocation and recognition of the city as Israel’s united capital? Despite promising to relocate the embassy while a candidate – a promise also made by President Bush prior to his election in 2000 – Trump has remained mum on the issue of whether he will follow through and implement the 1995 law. In recent weeks there have been mixed signals regarding the possible move, with a senior Republican lawmaker charged with oversight of America’s embassies claiming the relocation would likely be announced during the president’s trip to Israel later this month. An agenda list drawn up by White House Chief Strategist Steve Bannon and inadvertently publicized in an Israel Independence Day selfie with Rabbi Shmuely Boteach suggested the move was on the Trump administration’s "to-do" list. On Thursday, however, there were unofficial indications that the White House is in no rush to make the move. According to US officials privy to the details of America’s embassy operations in Israel, Trump’s newly appointed and sworn-in Ambassador to Israel, David Friedman will be working out of the existing US Embassy in Tel Aviv, and will be commuting from his home in Jerusalem to the coastal city. While Friedman will live in his personal residence in Jerusalem, the official Ambassador’s Residence used for state functions will remain at its present location in Herzliya Pituah, north of Tel Aviv. Some meetings, however, may be held at the King David Hotel in Jerusalem, the officials said. Ambassador Friedman will arrive in Israel later this month, and is slated to present his credentials to President Reuven Rivlin on May 15th, one week before Trump’s visit to Israel. Former Senator Joseph Lieberman (D-Connecticut), who vouched for Friedman during his Senate confirmation hearing, said it was safe to assume Friedman would be officially assigned to Tel Aviv, at least until some official change in policy is clearly announced by the White House. "I hope that Friedman will be the first Ambassador to represent the US in Jerusalem, but it’s safe to assume that the government will do this in stages," Lieberman said. 3. NETANYAHU: 'HE WAS A LOVER OF ISRAEL, RABBI AND EDUCATOR' by Hezki Baruch Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu expressed "deep sorrow" at the passing of Rabbi Benny Elon. "My wife and I express deep sorrow at the passing of Rabbi Elon, a lover of the land of Israel, a rabbi and educator, former MK. The Rabbi was a man of pleasant ways, who worked in his public life both inside and outside the Knesset for the nation of Israel, the Torah of Israel, and the land of Israel. May his memory be a blessing." President Reuven Rivlin said, "Rabbi Benny Elon was a big-hearted man, who dedicated himself entirely for the sake education, and the public. As a minister, as a member of parliament, and as a man of action, vision, and of spirit, Rabbi Benny Elon was one of the great fighters and doers for the sake of the Land of Israel, for its residents, and its children. "As a friend and companion, he was for me a learning partner, an intellectual sparring partner, whose commitment to Israeli society and the State of Israel was unwavering and deeply rooted. "In recent years, Rabbi Benny Elon worked to strengthen Israel's global standing, founding many influential organizations, working against the isolation of Israel even in the most difficult times, and against the most hostile opinions. May his memory be a blessing." 4. 'LOVE OF ISRAEL WAS IN HIS BLOOD' by Arutz Sheva Staff Justice Minister Ayelet Shaked reacted to news of Rabbi Benny Elon’s passing at age 62 after a long struggle with cancer. "He was both a man of the spirit who established a yeshiva with an emphasis on creativity, and a leader and man of action with all his being," she said. "A man of vision. A complex mixture so missing from view today. Rabbi Benny, your special personality will be missed in Israeli society, but your spirit will continue to influence. I promise you that the ZIonist project which you loved and worked to put on firm foundations all your life will continue to grow and flourish," she said. Deputy Defense Minister Eli Ben-Dahan said, "This is a sad and painful day. Benny Elon was one of the great lovers of Israel, its land, its people and its Torah. He was given a great gift for outreach, he even knew how to bring non-Jews closer to love of the land Israel and the Jewish people. I merited to learn with Benny and be his neighbor in the Golan. May his memory be a blessing." Minister Ayoob Kara said that the Rabbi "was a man for whom love of the land of Israel was in his blood, and he worked with all his power to maintain its completeness." MK Yehuda Glick (Likud) said that Elon was "a dear and unique man in Israeli public life. Modest, glowing countenance, lover of the land, over of the state, lover of Israel and every man just as he is. One of the leaders in strengthening the connection between Israel and the nations of the world." "I merited to visit him during his sickness and received much love and encouragement from him for my work on the issue. I will do everything I can to continue his legacy." 5. 'THE SETTLERS HAVE SEIZED CONTROL OF THE ISRAELI FLAG' by Arutz Sheva Staff The senior economics commentator Nehemia Stressler lamented what he claimed was a decrease in number of Israeli flags seen this year on Israeli Independence Day. In an article he published in Haaretz, Stressler blamed the decrease on "settlers" in Judea and Samaria. "The number of flags waving this year on cars and porches was embarrassingly low. I remember how my father was accustomed to decorating the porch with green branches on which he hung pictures of the Chief of Staff and President - and Israeli flags," he said. "Since then," he asserted, "everything has changed. The nationalistic Right headed by the settlers has seized control of the flag. They wave it in defiance, as they hold their violent marches in the heart of Hevron, or when they go riot in a neighboring village. They use the flag so that it will be clear to everyone who is in control and who is being controlled." He attacked what he called "the racist Right." "Lehava, ‘La Familia,’ and the ‘Lions of the Shadow’ wrap themselves in Israeli flags every time they set out for a violent demonstration. The result is that whoever sees himself as a liberal or moderate or man of the Left finds it hard to identify with the symbol whose smell has been made a stench. Therefore, such a person doesn’t wave it on Independence Day, and the porches are empty. But this is a mistake. Giving up on the flag is surrendering without a fight." Stressler called not to give in to "messianic nationalism," and emphasized that "It is forbidden for the ‘State of Judea’ to lead us to destruction. We need to do exactly the opposite: return the flag to the values of the Declaration of Independence, the values of humanism and equality - and to raise it high, with pride and the demonstration of ownership. By the true Zionists, the dedicated patriots, and not by nationalistic sleepwalkers who endanger the very existence of the state." 6. OFFICER TO BE DISMISSED FOLLOWING INFILTRATION FROM LEBANON by Arutz Sheva Staff The commander of the IDF Northern Command, Maj. Gen. Yoel Strick, decided to write a command note to the battalion commander and dismiss a deputy company commander, following the infiltration of a Lebanese citizen into Israel via the northern border. The Lebanese citizen entered Israel last Thursday. He was captured in Kiryat Shmona and was transferred back to Lebanon a day later. Following the penetration, a military investigation was conducted, headed by the OC Central Command. IDF officials say that the lessons of the incident will be brought to the attention of the forces and additional professional complementary investigations will be carried out in order to prevent the recurrence of such incidents in the future. As stated, as part of the conclusions of the incident, the battalion commander was given a command note and the deputy company commander was removed from his post. In addition, four officers and soldiers will be disciplined. 7. BOTH OF OUR PARENTS HAVE TERRIBLE DISEASES Leah Ashkenazi's family was catapulted into a state of chaos when her husband was diagnosed with cancer last year. The family's insurance policy reportedly does not cover Mr Ashkenazi's expensive & painful treatments. Now solely responsible for her four children while her husband fought his battle with disease, the family was catapulted into poverty. However despite the already tragic nature of their circumstances, more devastating news was brewing beneath the surface. Recently Leah was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. The family now has to bear the weight of two sets of uninsured and painful medical treatments. The four Ashkenazi children now have two parents suffering from critical illness. CLICK HERE TO SEE THE FULL CAMPAIGN Ms. Ashkenazi launched a fundraising campaign this week, in hopes of meeting some of her family's needs. Video footage on the campaign page shows the desperate plea of a young mother with tired eyes. "I'm asking you personally, please help me rebuild my family," she says, before giving donors a blessing that they should never need to beg. TIBI INCENSED: AN OUTRAGEOUS AND SHAMEFUL IDEA by Arutz Sheva Staff Senior officials in Israel intend to fly doctors from a foreign country to forcibly feed security prisoners who are currently engaged in a hunger strike and who, it is feared, could require hospitalization. Channel 2 reported that the officials decided to "import" the foreign doctors in light of the refusal of the Israeli Medical Association to forcibly feed the hunger strikers. 850 prisoners are currently engaged in the hunger strike. MK Ahmed Tibi (Joint Arab List) slammed the plan and said that "the idea of flying doctors from abroad to perform forced feeding is an immoral manipulation aimed at bypassing the Israel Medical Association's refusal to provide for forced feeding." He added that "the very idea is horrible and disgraceful, and that the human demands of the prisoners should be met instead of conducting a dirty struggle against them." The terrorist's strike was joined yesterday by several of Hamas's most prominent murderers, including Abbas Said, who planned the terror attack at the Park Hotel in Netanya, Ibrahim al-Hamed, commander of the Hamas military wing in Judea and Samaria, and Hassan Salameh, a senior member of Hamas' military wing. Ahmed Saadat, the Secretary General of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, also joined in the hunger strike. [video:2027703] Public Security Minister Gilad Erdan visited the Metzada unit of the Israel Prison Service Thursday along with Major General Ofra Klinger, the Commissioner of the Israel Prison Service. Metzada is an elite takeover unit which specializes in extreme scenarios that may develop inside prisons and wards. The main functions of the unit are to serve as a takeover unit, to engage in hostage rescue operations, return escaped prisoners, and to reinforce prison guards during emergency situations. The Metzada unit is currently on high alert and close to the security prisons in light of the hunger strike by hundreds of Arab security prisoners. The unit carries out various activities alongside the security departments and is prepared to provide a response in case a serious event occurs in an Israeli prison. Minister Erdan watched the takeover exercises and stated that he was impressed by the capabilities and level of preparedness of the unit. He said that the hunger strike was nothing more than an attempt to exert pressure on the State of Israel, and that the state must be prepared for all possible scenarios. ------------------------------------------------ Subscribe to this Daily Israel Report: http://www.israelnationalnews.com/Subscribe/ | |
