1. SUPREME COURT RULES: MEIR ETTINGER WILL NOT ATTEND SON'S BRIT
by Shoshana Miskin
A panel of three Supreme Court judges denied on Monday a petition filed by the Honenu legal rights organization to allow administrative detainee Meir Ettinger, who has been held without charge for over seven months, temporary release to attend his firstborn son's brit milah (circumcision).
Justices Noam Sohlberg, Uzi Fogelman and Esther Hayut said that Ettinger posed a security threat, and only agreed to Israel Prison Services' offer to allow the circumcision ceremony to take place inside the prison with a total of 15 guests, who must all undergo a thorough security check by prison guards prior to entering the facility.
On Sunday, Ettinger's family had already refused the offer stating they would not succumb to such "humiliation," especially since 15 people would not even include all the immediate family members.
Following the judges' ruling, one of Ettinger's brothers erupted in court and exclaimed: "You are trying to re-educate, you Bolsheviks!" Court security guards removed him from the complex.
Attorney Ariel Atari who represented Ettinger in court said in response: "It is the right of a person that his son not begin his life within the walls of the prison. IPS's argument in court that there is not enough time to prepare logistics to release him today is scandalous, given the fact that we applied for an appeal for eight days already. The reality in which an administrative detainee, with no incriminating evidence against him, cannot leave to attend his son's circumcision, whereas a terrorist convicted of murder would be granted leave - should infuriate every law-abiding citizen."
Honenu's executive director, Shmuel Meidad said in response: "All this secrecy is all an act filled with lies.
"Only three months ago, the administrative detainee Mordechai Meyer was released after the ISA admitted he sat in jail for no reason for five months on the basis of 'secret and dangerous evidence.' Why is it that nobody is held accountable? There are countless of ISA arrests 'secret evidence' that end in nothing and it does not stop the ISA not its superiors from continuous unrestrained violence aginst Jews. Why? Just because they look and think differently from them.
"They are now using the same basis of lies in a situation preventing a father from one of the most important and fundamental commandments of circumcising his son. After all this how can they be surprised that people do not trust them."
The Ettinger family has invited the public to attend the Brit Milah which will be held in the "Kahal Chassidim" Hall, 11 HaShla St. Jerusalem, at 2 p.m.
2. DAMASCUS GATE TERRORISTS' HOUSES DEMOLISHED
by Arutz Sheva Staff
IDF forces in cooperation with the Border Policemen and Civil Administration demolished the homes of terrorists Ahmad Nagah Ismail Nasser, Ahmed Najah Abed Alalatif Abu-Alaroub and Mohammad Ahmad Mohammad Kamil in the Arab town of Kabatiya.
The demolition was issued following a shooting attack carried out by the three terrorists at Jerusalem's Damascus Gate killing female Border Police officer Hadar Cohen and wounding another female officer.
According to an initial investigation into the attack, two Arab terrorists armed with concealed Carl Gustav sub-machine guns, knives and bombs were spotted acting suspiciously by a team of Border Police officers close to Damascus Gate.
When officers approached, one of the terrorists produced his ID, and another suddenly stabbed an officer, moderately wounding her. Cohen immediately shot the stabber as other officers eliminated the second terrorist.
A third terrorist then attacked Cohen from behind, critically injuring her. He was eventually neutralized by a police commander.
3. ZIONIST UNION: FIRE SHAKED FOR CRITICIZING SUPREME COURT
by Hezki Ezra
MK Shelly Yachimovich (Zionist Union) has called on Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu to fire Justice Minister Ayelet Shaked (Jewish Home), following the latter's criticism of the Supreme Court.
"Shaked's lashing out at at the Supreme Court is a dangerous act of violence," she claimed. "Shaked is trying to destroy the justice system's independence, to scare and to threaten the judges. This is unfortunate conduct for someone who is supposed to strengthen the Supreme Court in Israel, one of the best courts in the world."
MK Yachimovich continued, "Instead of praising the existence of an independent and impartial Court, she is trying with all her might to weaken its standing. The Israeli public places its faith in the Supreme Court and gives it -- according to every poll -- very high marks, despite the rhetoric against it. It's not the same for the political system, whose standing continues to decline, largely due to the irresponsible conduct of government ministers.
"The judiciary's independence is a basic fundamental of democracy, and if the damage to it continues, Netanyahu will no longer be able to boast that Israel is the only democracy in the Middle East."
Zionist Union head Yitzhak Herzog also offered harsh words for Shaked from his Twitter account. "Moti Yogev's D9 is nothing compared to Shaked's artillery attacks on the Supreme Court. Her tirade against the Court is a disgrace and crosses the line. She is shooting and breaking and bringing down the house on all of us," he wrote.
Shaked responded to the calls to fire her and said, "I am disappointed that those are always talking about the need for free expression tend to restrict it when it comes to things with which they disagree and that are difficult to hear.
"I began my talk by saying that, in my opinion, even the deepest controversy can be an important tool for advancing the public discourse and challenging the general mindset. I continued with the important and relevant example of the Supreme Court's ruling on the gas outline because I consider it to be a mistaken ruling. When you respect the ruling you can also criticize it."
She concluded by saying, "MK Yachimovich is crossing the line. Calling for the firing of an Israeli minister for faithfully fulfilling his or her duty, and for loudly expressing the values for which he or she was chosen is absurd. That is the dangerous behavior that we must avoid. That is the true attempt at an empty political assassination, an attempt to intimidate elected officials for their opinions."
4. SHIN BET ARRESTS BROTHER OF DUMA ARSON VICTIM
by Matt Wanderman
The Israel Security Agency (ISA, also known as the Shabak or Shin Bet) has arrested Wissam Hussein Dawabshe, whose sister Riham was killed in the Duma arson attack. He is suspected of security offenses, which some reports say include membership in Hamas.
No further information has been released about Wissam.
Riham Dawabshe, her husband Saad, and their 18-month-old son Ali were all killed after their home was firebombed last summer. Only the elder son, who was four years old at the time, survived.
Israeli security forces quickly began cracking down on Jewish extremists. A number of people were arrested and two were charged with perpetrating the attack.
5. SHAKED CHALLENGES COURT: GAS DEAL 'TOO FAR', BUT OSLO WAS OK?
by Hezki Ezra
Justice Minister Ayelet Shaked (Jewish Home) spoke out against attempts to silence criticism of the Supreme Court.
She began her speech at the Israel Bar Association conference in Eilat by praising the country's judges and the head of the judicial system, Supreme Court Justice Miriam Naor.
However, the remainder of the talk centered around sharp criticism of the Court's rulings, particularly its treatment of the gas outline.
"As Justice Minister I feel I have the right and the duty to criticize the Supreme Court's erroneous ruling," she said. "The decision to cancel the gas outline could turn out to cost billions of shekels."
Shaked stated that "more than the great economic damage, the Supreme Court's decision turned the court into an arena for arbitrating political questions that are supposed to be decided in the voting booth.
"We have reached an absurd situation in which NGOs and Knesset members are the ones petitioning against the gas outline. Instead of dealing with it in the Knesset, they do so through the justice system."
During her talk, Shaked expressed confusion about the Court's reasoning that the outline would limit future governments' actions. "I don't remember why, according to the logic that prevent limited future opinions, the government wasn't prevented from signing the Oslo Accords, which have limited later governments far more. And that was done outside of the legislative process."
The court specifically rejected the gas outline's stability clause, which would prevent any changes to the deal for ten years.
6. ISRAEL PREPARES FOR TSUNAMIS
by Shoshana Miskin
Emergency personnel participated Monday morning in Israel's first tsunami wave simulation to raise public awareness and practice appropriate and effective responses in the event that a tsunami hits Israel's Mediterranean coastline.
Dubbed "Nachshol Kachol" (Blue Tidal Wave), the exercise included evacuating citizens from the beaches of Ashdod and Ashkelon to safe gathering points in accordance with the tsunami warning signs.
The exercise was conducted by the National Emergency Defense Ministry and Israeli police, in cooperation with the Home Front Command, local authorities and emergency agencies.
The Mediterranean Sea is a vulnerable region for tsunamis. Around 25% of all recorded tsunamis in human history took place in the Mediterranean.
Every 100 years on average a significant tsunami takes place in the sea, and every 250 years on average a tsunami strikes the shoreline of Israel.
Warnings about a possible tsunami are received in Israel once every three months on average. The last such warning was received on April 15, 2015, due to an earthquake off Cyprus that measured 6.1 on the Richter scale. Another warning was received the day after, due to an earthquake near Crete of the same magnitude.
7. MUSLIM SCHOOL IN ENGLAND TEACHES HATE FOR JEWS, EUROPE
by Matt Wanderman
A private Muslim school in England is again drawing attention, this time for teaching anti-Semitism and a strong anti-European ideology.
The Islamic Tarbiyah Academy, located in the northern town of Dewsbury, offers classes for 140 children, as well as hosting an after-school religioous program and adult education classes. It is still run by its founder, Mufti Zubair Dudha.
Sky News recently revealed that a significant portion of Mufti Dudha's teachings revolve around convincing his students that the outside world is dedicated to attacking Muslims. To counter this, Dudha treats interactions with the wider society as a battle of life and death.
In particular, he used the Protocols of the Elders of Zion, a notorious anti-Semitic forgery, to claim that Jews are controlling the world.
Other times, he referred to movies, magazines and colorful pictures as tools to "poison the thinking and minds" of Muslims. "The various forms of distractions have been successful to consider extent in achieving their objectives (of destroying Islam)," he explained.
Dudha further warned that women should not be permitted to work and that they must cover their entire bodies whenever they step outside of their homes.
While Dudha has denounced terrorism and violence, he also encourages all Muslims to be ready to "expend... even life" in the struggle to remake the world "according to Allah's just order." The same leaflet ended with the message: "Therefore to struggle in the path of Allah with the pen; speech and sword is Jihad."
When asked for comment, Dudha claimed that his statements were misrepresented. "It saddens me greatly that certain extracts from our publications have been taken and misrepresented to link the Academy with extremism," he said. "We fully believe in the importance and need of integration whilst being able to practice our faith."
Dewsbury has had a significant history with radical Islam spreading among its youth. Despite having a population of only about 60,000 people, it produced one of the attackers involved in the 2005 London bombings, as well as the youngest suicide bomber and the youngest convicted terrorist in the country.
UK politicians are focusing more on domestic extremism following the recent ISIS attacks in Europe, and some have pointed to the Islamic Tarbiyah Academy as a specific concern.
Keith Vaz, the Home Affairs Select Committee chair, told Sky News, "After what we have seen in Paris and in Brussels and the way in which the Muslim community has come out so strongly in favor of peace and tolerance, I think these kinds of leaflets serve no purpose but to divide in a poisonous and totally reckless way."
Similarly, a statement from the Department for Education read, "These serious allegations are under investigation. While it would be inappropriate to comment on the specific investigations of these institutions, we are clear that extremism has no place in our society and we are determined to protect children from it."
Arutz Sheva has previously reported on the Islamic Tarbiyah Academy, noting that the school received a positive outside reviews despite threatening to expel students who socialize with non-Muslims.
8. BUILDING A SYNAGOGUE AT KIBBUTZ SDE NECHEMIA
by Arutz Sheva Staff
[youtube:2014126]
Over five years ago, Ayelet Hashachar ("AH") began working in Kibbutz Sde Nechemia, one of the various Kibbutzim in Emek HaHula (Hula Valley).
It all started with a phone call from a resident looking for a place to daven. "I'm davening under a street lamp by myself," he explained. Two weeks later he called back and said, "I put a sign on the lamppost "mechakim l'tisha" (waiting for nine)! Erev Pesach, he asked "what will I do on Pesach"?
Two months later sparks ignited: Ten members of the Kibbutz agreed to daven together every week. Seeing the commitment of its residents, the Kibbutz agreed to provide them with a place to daven. AH provided furniture and a Sefer Torah. Slowly, the davening "circle" widened and the Kibbutz understood that it was time to build a synagogue in the center of the Kibbutz. The Kibbutz was expanding and accepting new members from all over, including traditional Jews who needed a synagogue.
AH thought it fitting to dedicate the new synagogue in memory of Tamar Ariel, A"H, the first religious female navigator in the Israeli Air Force, since the Chief of the Air Force Base where she had been stationed came from that Kibbutz, and the Kibbutz wanted to memorialize her.
AH together with the Israeli Government has raised 80% of the costs to break ground (close to 1,000,000 NIS). But AH can't break ground until it raises the remaining 300,000 NIS. If you would like to be part of this project or hear more about it, please contact Rav Shlomo Raanan at ah.shlomo@gmail.com or gideonshelach@gmail.com and mention "Sde Nechemia."
