1. NETANYAHU STOPPED PERES FROM ESTABLISHING PALESTINIAN STATE
by Gary Willig

Channel 2 Diplomatic Correspondent, Udi Segal, reported in his weekly column in the Maariv newspaper that former President Shimon Peres and Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas engaged in negotiations to come up with a plan that would be accepted by Netanyahu and the Israeli political right.

Segal said that Peres received permission from Netanyahu to search for a way through the diplomatic standstill "possibly because he wanted to use Peres to legitimize the peace talks and help maintain good foreign relations. But Peres was not going to be used as a mere fig leaf and creatively moved beyond the limits he had been given."

According to Segal, Peres and Abbas reached an agreement in principle in which which the IDF would have units stationed to protect Israeli citizens within a Palestinian State.

"The details were not finalized, but the idea was moving forward until Netanyahu blocked it at the last minute while Peres was on a visit to Jordan." as revealed by reporter Ben Caspit. The shelved plan later received a hint of approval when Netanyahu hinted in an interview with Channel 2 in 2013 that many settlements might remain in a Palestinian state." wrote Segal.

"If this opportunity really existed, then it was lost. Peres stayed home. Abbas felt betrayed and walked away from the idea. And Netanyahu worked on the plans of Tony Blair, which ended up being a dead end. Peres tried until the last minute. He never stopped dreaming. He knew from experience that the State of Israel was born from a dream, a vision. From the dream of Herzl." Segal added

2. SHAKED: ABBAS IS INCITING VIOLENCE AND HATRED
by Arutz Sheva Staff

Justice Minister Ayelet Shaked (Jewish Home) criticized those who shook hands with President of the Palestinian Authority Mahmoud Abbas, including Prime Minister Netanyahu.

"I'm not excited about him," she said in an interview with Army Radio, "you have to understand that he incites violence and hatred, we can't forget that."

She added that she didn't know what the Prime Minister and his wife were supposed to do in that situation but that she would not have shaken Abbas' hand.

Shaked expressed hope and said that the government wouldn't change its form, and is functioning normally. "In the political system," she said, " there are always crises, there are ups and downs, and this year was no different than previous years."

"From my experience, this government is very stable. The relationship between the party heads and the ministers are excellent. We are working together and supporting each other. This is an excellent government and I think that, if the prime minister doesn't change it, it will last for a long time," Shaked estimated.

In regards to Amona, Shaked stated that the concept of land compensation is still on the agenda. "This was a solution that the people of Amona presented," Shaked stated, "We are checking its viability and in three or four weeks we will be better equipped to provide a solution." She stated that the concept of providing land compensation for the people of Amona is still relevant, despite opposition from Arabs.

Shaked responded to the future of the bill that would normalize the status of Jewish communities in Judea and Samaria and said, "let's see how this compensation plan unfolds, we are planning a strategic solution that will solve this problem and this solution should happen within the coming months."

3. 'WE THOUGHT WE'D NEVER SEE ANTI-SEMITISM AGAIN'
by Arutz Sheva Staff

British Prime Minister Theresa May released a special holiday message on Sunday, hours before the beginning of the Jewish New Year – Rosh Hashanah.

The video message, directed both towards the UK Jewish community and Jews worldwide, praised Jewish contributions to Britain, and renewed the British government's pledge to protect the community from the rising specter of anti-Semitism.

"We remember the tremendous contribution made by Britain's Jewish community to this country. From those who have served in the armed forces, to those leading in fields such as business, science, and the arts. You have given so much over the years, while at the same time, maintaining a sense of identity, religion, and culture."

Prime Minister May added that despite the belief by Britons that widespread anti-Semitism would never flourish again, it was indeed on the rise, pledging to stamp out "shameful hatred".

"I want to ensure that Britain is a place where all our communities can flourish, and that means stamping out sickening and shameful hatred, including anti-Semitism, the likes of which I never thought we would see again. I am clear that such hatred has absolutely no place in our society.

4. REFORM MOVEMENT TO CAMPAIGN AGAINST ISRAEL ON ROSH HASHANAH
by Gary Willig

Reform and Conservative congregations in the US have launched a campaign of protest against the government of Israel.

The Reform and Conservative movements cited as reason for the effort the ritual bath (mikvaot) bill banning use of public facilities for conversions not performed by recognized authorities -which passed its second and third readings in the Knesset - the government's decision not to implement an agreement establishing a Reform prayer section at the Western Wall, and the issue of conversion. In each of these cases, the non-Orthodox movements were denied official state recognition.

According to a report in Haaretz on Sunday, the protest campaign is being led by the JFNA, the Jewish Federations of North America, the largest Jewish organization on the North American continent. The campaign is to include sermons on the subject during the High Holidays.

The Foreign Ministry instructed its embassy staff in the US to prepare for a protest campaign. Diplomats were also instructed to have an increased presence in liberal American synagogues during this campaign.

"We assume that for most of you such visits are commonplace, but due to the sensitivity of the situation more attention and preparation is required." said Akiva Tor, the director of the Department for Jewish Communities at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

He also asked the diplomats to stress the fact that Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu and the entire government are committed to finding a solution to the issue of prayer arrangements at the Western Wall in accordance with the government decision on the matter but "Given the political difficulties created the subject requires more time. "

5. LAPID OPENS WIDE LEAD OVER NETANYAHU IN LATEST POLL
by David Rosenberg

Thirty-three percent of Israelis approve of Binyamin Netanyahu's service as Prime Minister, a new Panels Politics poll indicates, while 59% of Israelis disapprove of Mr. Netanyahu.

According to the poll, published Sunday morning by Maariv, Prime Minister Netanyahu still retains leads over possible challengers to the premiership – but his Likud party would nevertheless likely lose to former Finance Minister Yair Lapid's Yesh Atid party.

When given the choice of Netanyahu or a series of possible challengers, Netanyahu remains the favorite – though in some cases by narrow margins.

While 44% said they favored Netanyahu as Prime Minister, 34% said they would prefer Lapid.

Zionist Union leader Isaac Herzog – who was considered a serious contender for the premiership in 2015 – was the candidate of choice for just 19% of Israelis in a head-to-head matchup with Netanyahu, compared to 55% for Mr. Netanyahu.

If Jewish Home chief Naftali Bennett were the primary competition for Netanyahu, the latter would enjoy a 20-point lead, 44% to 24%. Netanyahu's lead over Kahlon was essentially the same; 44% to 23%.

Interior Minister Gideon Saar (Likud) came closest to beating Netanyahu, with 33% to the Netanyahu's 38%.

In a Knesset election, however, Yesh Atid would beat the ruling Likud party by five points, the poll showed, 27 to 22.

In a distant third, the Jewish Home would win 14 seats, up from the 8 it won in 2015.

The predominantly Arab Joint List party would remain stable at 13. The far-left Meretz party would also maintain its current strength, with five mandates.

Isaac Herzog's Zionist Union, which won 24 seats in 2015, would plummet to just 10 if elections were held today.

Finance Minister Moshe Kahlon's Kulanu party would sink from 10 seats to just 6, while Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman's Yisrael Beytenu would rise from 6 to 9.

The haredi parties would make a net gain of one seat, from 13 to 14. Shas would remain stable at 7, while United Torah Judaism would rise from 6 to 7.

The poll also posed a hypothetical scenario, with a "Liberal Likud" faction entering the race, bringing together Gideon Saar, former Defense Minister Moshe Yaalon, and Kulanu's Moshe Kahlon (also a former Likud member).

In such a scenario, Likud would come out on top with 21 seats, Yesh atid in second with 20, and the new "Liberal Likud" with 19 mandates.

Shas would lose one seat, from 7 to 6, as would Meretz, falling from 5 to 4. The Zionist Union would lose three, falling from 10 to 7.

When asked whether Sergeant Elor Azariya, now on trial for shooting a wounded terrorist in Hevron, was justified in his actions, Israelis were roughly split evenly, with 46% saying he was justified, compared to 41% who said he was not.

6. ISIS CELL IN JERUSALEM?
by Uzi Baruch

Six Jerusalem Arabs have been indicted for allegedly working to establish a cell of the ISIS terror organization inside Israel.

The six were charged in a Jerusalem court of security offenses, assisting an enemy in war-time, and association with a terror group.

The suspects are residents of the Shuafat and Anata neighborhoods.

According to the indictment, from 2015 until August 2016, the suspects made efforts to enlist in ISIS and establish an ISIS cell inside Israel. Among other activities, the six organized study sessions to spread the terror group's radical ideology.

The indictment also revealed that some of the suspects attempted to travel to Syria to join the jihadist organization's fight against the Assad regime.

The suspects also reportedly planned terror attacks against Jews in Jerusalem and Tel Aviv.

7. CLINTON LYING TO SANDERS SUPPORTERS, SAYS TRUMP AFTER AUDIO LEAK
by David Rosenberg

A newly-released audio recording of a primary season meeting with supporters is threatening to hurt Clinton with a much-needed voter demographic this November, and give the Trump campaign some much-needed ammunition after a week of post-debate troubles for the Republican candidate.

On Friday, The Washington Free Beacon released an audio recording of the Democratic nominee during a February primary season fundraiser in Virginia.

During the event, Mrs. Clinton attempted to cast herself as a centrist alternative to what she described as the "populist, nationalist xenophobic" approach of then-GOP frontrunner Donald Trump, and a naïve, "democratic-socialist" vision espoused by Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders.

Sanders, who won strong backing from younger voters and independents, offered a grab-bag of government-funded benefits, including tuition-free college and an expansion of the Medicare system to cover all Americans.

While Clinton maintained a narrow lead over Sanders through the primary season and eventually secured the party's nomination, she has failed to draw strong support from Millennial voters – a group that overwhelmingly backed President Obama both in 2008 and 2012.

In an attempt to energize support from younger voters, Clinton has borrowed some elements of Sanders' platform, calling for, among other things, tuition-free college for low- and middle-income families.

But in the newly-released recording of Mrs. Clinton, the former Secretary of State dismisses the ideas advocated by Sanders, and writes off his supporters as political neophytes who fail to understand the complexities of economics.

"Some are new to politics completely," Clinton said of Sanders supporters. "They're children of the Great Recession. And they are living in their parents' basement."

"There's just a deep desire to believe that we can have free college, free healthcare, that what we've done hasn't gone far enough, and that we just need to, you know, go as far as, you know, Scandinavia, whatever that means, and half the people don't know what that means, but it's something that they deeply feel."

The recording was reportedly unearthed by hackers who took emails from the account of a campaign staffer.

The comments drew harsh criticism from some Sanders backers, who lit up social media with the hashtag "#Basementdwellers".

The Trump campaign pounced on the recording, comparing it Clinton's recent "basket of deplorables" attack on supporters of the Republican nominee.

"Crooked H is nasty to Sanders supporters behind closed doors," tweeted Trump. "Owned by Wall St and Politicians, HRC is not with you."

"Who else does @HillaryClinton ridicule behind closed doors for $$$?", added Trump campaign manager Kellyanne Conway.

A Clinton campaign rep suggested the former First Lady was encouraging young voters to "set big goals", rather than dismissing them.

"She wants young people to be idealistic and set big goals," said Glen Caplin.

8. 'ACCEPTANCE AND ASSIMILATION HAVE TURNED AROUND TO KILL US'
by Yoni Kempinski

[youtube:2019733]

"For three thousand years we've been fighting for acceptance, and now that we've been accepted - it's turning around to kill us," said Jewish billionaire Sheldon Adelson.

Adelson, the main supporter of IAC and of Birthright Taglit, spoke at a Birthright gathering during the IAC conference in Washington, DC and lamented the connection between Jews feeling a real part of US citizenry after experiencing anti-Semitism for most of their history, and the skyrocketing rate of intermarriage.

"Without Birthright, there are statistics that have been proven at least twice that there's only 42% of Jewish kids between the ages of 18 and 26 that say they marry within their religion or bring up their children Jewish," he said.

"In another two or three generations," warned Adelson, "there won't be any secular Jews left. Think about that. For 3,000 years we've been fighting for acceptance, and now that we've been accepted - it's turning around to kill us."

Birthright "is the most important program of my lifetime. All the kids that go to Birthright – the number jumps from 42% to 76%," he added.
